As time got longer, the quarrels became louder and louder. To Dalton, it felt like a horde of insects circling around his ears. He felt the negativity emitted from the noise spiraling around his head. No normal 7-year-old kid should be withstand this type of negativity. Every kid deserves to live in harmony with their parents and siblings. This unappealing environment
Unable to handle the tumultuous negativity, he covered his ear and squeezed his eyes. But it was in vain, darkness reached his heart and devoured him. He kept murmuring something along the lines of
"I hope I can't get affected by other people's emotions..."
He then passed out.---
It was just another regular morning, the sun came out blinding pedestrians on the streets; rivers and lakes shimmered in the sunlight; the pale blue sky is floating with white clouds; the breeze blowing the leaves beside the road and the crystal clear dewdrops slid down the leaves and jumped cheerfully; the birds leaping back and forth on the tree as if telling people a new day has begun.
Dalton got woken up by the birds when they were having a singing competition, or should I say 'chirping competition'. Anyways, Dalton made his bed, brushed his teeth, change some clothes...just some daily routine stuff. He then went downstairs to prepare for school. As he walked down the stairs, he saw his parents arguing...wait, no, talking. He went down just as if they were talking like how normal people would.
Why you ask? What happened to the constant argument between his parents? Did they make up overnight? Did they set their differences aside and start to get along? The answer... No, they did not. In fact, Dalton was the one who changed. After sleep engulfed him yesterday night, his brain started developing an immunity to the negative emotions of others. It protected the poor kid from enduring so much negativity daily. But everything comes with a price, in addition to not feeling negative emotions, he can't feel positive emotions too. So right now, everyone in the eyes of Dalton are just puppets. While the world is moving on normally, Dalton's perspective of people changed.
Oblivious to the situation, Dalton walked up to his parents to ask for a ride to school. That earned him a slap to the face. His face displayed utter confusion. He had no idea why did his mom, who was talking peacefully just a second ago, slapped him in the face.
He looked up to face his mom.
"Mom...Why did you slap me? It hurts a lot..."
"Why did I slap you you say? Can't you see that I and your garbage father are having some problems?"
"Hey watch your mouth, woman!" a deep and grumpy voice interrupted Dalton's mom.
"B-but I still need to go to school! I'm going to be late!" Dalton exclaimed as he pointed at the authentic clock displayed at the center of the living room. Obviously, he didn't read the room, but how would he? In his eyes, both of his parents emit the same emotion the whole time.
Despite arguing every day, both parent figures put the boy's studies above anything else. Looking at the time, Dalton's mom decided to put their unfinished business aside and drive him to his primary school.
---
Upon reaching the school, his usually cheerful and active friends felt a bit off. He feels like something is wrong but he just can't put his mind to it. Of course, there's nothing wrong with the children. As you already know, it's Dalton's mind that is pulling tricks on him. Ignoring the uneasy feeling, Dalton waved to his friends. They saw him and excitedly waved back. In case you didn't know, Dalton is the star and the jokester in their grade. Everyone was always glad to have him in their presence.
'Did something happen? They don't look too happy today....' Dalton thought to himself after seeing his friend's response to his wave.
Shrugging off the thoughts, he went to talk with them. Being the class clown, he decided to crack some jokes with them.
Dalton made up one of his most hellish jokes and decided to share it with them. "Hey hey, what do you call a picture of an orphan? A family photo!"
Laughter erupted throughout the class but to Dalton, all he sees are his friends laughing with no emotion, just plain, like a doll. He started to question his jokes and thought it might be too hellish for them. So he tried another one.
"An Italian chef died, he pasta-way!"
Again, bland laughter filled the class. It is as if his class is sneering at his bad attempts at jokes. Dalton started to feel discouraged as he sunk into deep thoughts. That joke was made up accidentally when he was scribbling in his room. He giggled every now and then when he was reminded of that joke. At that moment, he thought it was the funniest thing ever. He can't wait for his class to hear about this genius joke he just created. But looking at his classmates' reaction, maybe it's not as funny as he thought it was. Dalton was used to everyone laughing at his jokes, so when something like this happened, he didn't know how to react. Gloom filled his mind as he felt everything around him wither away. The young boy's brain just can't process this much stress and confusion. At that moment, he felt like he was taking an Olympian math competition, confused by everything his eyes set upon.
Some classmates approached the figure that is feeling in despair right now. They don't understand why he is acting like that. He just told them the best joke they've heard and all of a sudden he's acting like this. He's like an enigma to them, they just couldn't figure out why. But after a while, they all thought about the same two actions: approaching him or leaving him alone to drown in his thoughts.
