After the ishvalan war, two alchemists with a son were discovered to have committed experiments and other shitty stuff to ishvalans. Shortly after the war ended, they were put to death for their crimes by the military.
The son, learning alchemy to take after his parents, unaware of their actions, is kidnapped by a small vengeful ishvalan group. He is tortured by the small group for around a year, and accidentally lost limbs in the process due to incompetent torturing (most of his fingers due to loss of blood circulation) and a leg due to frostbite.
After learning of the atrocities committed by his parents, yet still facing torture by the small group, he decided to continue his alchemy research after the group was discovered by military. Not to further his parents research, but to be better than his parents were.
Seeing what the military has done to such an extent, he refuses to join the military. (Honestly I'm not sure. Maybe he joins to further separate himself from his parents. All I had was the concept of amestrian murderers and what would become of them, and the lost limbs do to incompetent torture because automail ocs are cool. Maybe I'll change it up a bit. I actually have a lot of ideas for parents shortcomings falling on their youth)
