"Doom. My doom is coming..."
The evil sorcerer stared out from the balcony as his dragon fell to the Princess knight's sword.
She was a formidable opponent. And cunning.
"Downright cheating, but I guess all's fair..." he sighed, looking upon the anti-magic ring on his finger. It had been sent under the guise of a gift from one of his subordinates. The man was fortunately cleared of his name and released from the dungeons, but now what? Once put on the ring couldn't be taken off by the wearer. It took magic obviously. A tricky thing with an anti-magic item.
"Lord Gavin Vanderville!"
His gloomy thoughts interrupted, Gaven recalled his wandering mind back to the present situation and looked down on the princess as she hollered at him.
"I'm coming for you!"
"You've come this far, but you're only in the courtyard esteemed Princess," Gavin replied bitterly, "You still have many minions to defeat and traps to evade!"
Ug, his heart wasn't in it, he couldn't even feign posturing confidence or even a sneer.
Cheater!
He knew he was acting childish in sulking but he couldn't help it. For years of terrorizing the surrounding kingdoms, he had always expected to either reign until he felt like retiring or go out in an extraordinary battle the bards would sing of for centuries.
Not in a kazoo solo.
"Would you please stop?" he asked Atticus Vinch the III.
The kitten familiar left off playing the literal kazoo. Little rascal loved that thing.
"Sorry. Just figured I get as much in before it's all over." Atticus Vinch the III replied, "Doubt they'll let me have it in prison."
"You're not going to prison. When I'm dead your contract is over and you can leave. Everybody can. If she leaves anybody alive." Gavin sighed, looking back outside, "Ack what-?!"
To his utter shock, the princess was rising into the air and nearly at the balcony, "Ack! Run Atticus!""She can fly!?" Atticus Vinch the III gasped.
Gavin picked up his familiar and fled the scene, Slamming the door of his bedroom behind him he tore down the halls. Crap crap crap!
He heard his door crash open again as he got to the stairs and descended the spiral.
"Vanderville!" Shouted the princess, but Gavin didn't even glance back.
"Where do we go?!" Atticus Vinch the III wailed.
"The throne room? I dunno!"
This was humiliating! Why was he running like a coward? Had he lost his dignity when his magic was sealed?
"Ug, this is stupid." he muttered as they hit the landing, "Forget it Atticus. Just tell the others to flee and I'll deal with this." he grumbled as he turned to face his doom, "She killed my dragon, her army wiped mine out, no one's strong enough to protect me. What's the point in throwing people at her?"
"Master! No!" Atticus Vinch the III cried.
Gavin put the large kitten down and shooed him further, "Just go, I've made up my mind."
A shadow was cast over him and Gavin straightened, suppressing the urge to shiver.
"Stopped running already?" The princess's strong low voice asked.
Sighing and straightening his circlet, Gaven turned around, folding his arms, "I'm not even going to give a going out speech. This is all bull. You cheated and robbed me of my grand final moment. But I won't run like a coward just because I'm defenseless. I'll face the inevitable instead of prolonging it. Just run me through alr-"
