As a young boy ,the mirror fascinated me and I felt like going out to take it from them and have it as my own but I couldn't . later I found the white men leave with their bicycles . now I felt some kind of relief amidst my fear that the worst is yet to come .
When the white men left my father called all of is out to the front of our hut to tell us what he and the white men were discussing about he said "the white men came to ask for my permission to take some boys with them when they are going back to their country to teach them how to read and write and give them jobs and they in turn will give the village their shiny treasure (the mirror) to be given as special awards and also to be sold by the rich. And I as the next king cannot give such an order without one of my children following the the white men so Akpi will be following the white men to their because he is the most hardworking while the rest of you shall stay and I will install some sense and manners into you" .
Some of my siblings were crying to my father for them to go with the white men to their country but my father as hard hearted as usual bluntly refused.
The next day I was woken up by different noises I looked out and saw many boys ,some were crying some were laughing and some were just silent ,then I saw my mother coming out of the house with my bag , I immediately looked around my room and saw that my room has been cleared ,my mother has packed all my clothes into the bag she was carrying .
So soon!? I thought my father didn't even tell me that it was the next day we were leaving. I would have gone to say my last farewell to my siblings instead of hiding my self in my room all day .
Then my father came to my room with a new pair of clothes and told me to go and have my bath and get ready to leave with the other boys and he left immediately .
I went to have my bath and got ready to leave with the other boys who were lead by the white men. my siblings didn't even come out to see me go ,my father was cold and aggressive ,my mother was also cold but with a bitter face as if she was instructed to keep that face then we left . we walked for a very long time then we arrived at a place where there was a big thing like an oddly shaped house and it had some big black things that roll and make the house to move and they called it "TRUCK" and there was a man there that could speak like us and he told us that it is a way of taking people from place to another . then they told
us to enter the truck and it started moving and vibrating and it moved for a very very long time and it stopped and when we came down we walked for a short time and we saw a very large body of water it was so big and it looked endless then we saw more and more and more boys then they took us to a place where there was something I described as a very very large canoe and had a roof then they instructed us to enter it and surprisingly it did not sink so it started moving. Night came and it started to rain and it turned into a storm and it started breezing and made the water move violently then the big canoe started shaking and the white men did something very unthinkable , they started throwing the boys into the water we the other boys were afraid and we were very sure that the water was very deep if not the big canoe would not move .
