Spock stood outside his house watching an earth woman move into the house across from his, which was quiet unusual. "Spock! Come help me with the burluk." His mother called from inside their house. Spock went back inside and found his mother in the kitchen. She was making burluks as a housewarming gift for their new neighbor.
"Mother, why are you making a housewarming gift?" He asked, he found the whole thing illogical.
"Because Spock, they are new here and this will help them feel welcome." Amanda patiently explained to her son.
"I see. But why burluks?"
"Because they're delicious and most everyone likes sweet treats."
Humans are most illogical. He thought to himself.
"Yes Spock we are, but that's what makes us human." Amanda could always tell when her husband or son found something she was doing was illogical. They both got this cute little look of confusion, and they both vehemently deny it.
Spock helped his mother make the burluks and soon after she had him come with her to their new neighbor's house to deliver them. Amanda knocked on the door and they both could hear a woman shout, "Jim! Get the door for me!" A few moments later a little boy who looked quite a few years younger than Spock opened the door. The boy had sandy-blonde hair that got in the way of his eyes, he also was a bit on the thin side.
He looked shyly up to them through his banes with crystal blue eyes. "Hi." He quietly said.
"Hello sweetie!" Amanda began brightly, "I'm Amanda, and this is my son Spock. I was wondering if I could talk to your mom?"
"Okay." Jim nodded slightly and then left to go deeper into the house. A moment later a lady with slightly darker blonde hair came to the door. She seemed slightly stunned to see Amanda, "Wow. I didn't expect to meet another human while here on Vulcan."
Amanda laughed at that, "Yeah neither did I, so I hope you don't mind my presence."
"No, not at all, why don't you two come on in." She waved them in and led them to the living room. "Excuse the mess. Oh, by the way I'm Winona Kirk." Winona introduced herself.
"I'm Amanda and this is my son Spock."
"This is Jim, my youngest and Sam is in his room, he's my eldest." Winona told them and Jim was hiding behind her.
"Sam! We have company!" She shouted. A moment later a teenage boy, older than Spock, came out of a bedroom. Sam had jet black hair and was tall and lanky. He saw them and made his way towards them. Sam then stopped by his mother and picked Jim up, he carried the little boy to the couch and sat down with him.
"Hi." Sam nodded hello.
Spock watched Winona watching her sons and saw the way her hazel eyes held much sorrow. He nearly frowned in confusion for he couldn't figure out why she felt that way.
"Why don't we all sit and chat?" Winona suggested.
"That'll be wonderful!"
Spock, Amanda, and Winona all sat down on the chairs surrounding a coffee table that also faced the couch Jim and Sam were sitting on. "Oh! Before I forget I baked burluks!" Amanda exclaimed while putting the tin can containing the treat on the coffee table.
She opened it up and Jim exclaimed, "Cookies!"
Amanda chuckled and nodded yes, "Yep. Well Vulcan's version of cookies that is. Here please try one." She handed Jim a burluk. "Thank you, Ms. Amanda." he thanked, and then bit into the burluk.
"Hmm!!" Jim moaned in appreciation.
"I take it you like it?"
"Uh-huh! The bur... bur... cookie is delicious!" He couldn't quite pronounce the technical name.
"Burluk and thank you Jim. Sam, Winona, please try some." Sam and Winona also took one and ate. They both found the burluks delicious and said so as well.
"Thank you!" Amanda already knows she'll become good friends with their new neighbors.
While she loves her family and Vulcan itself, it is nice to have some human friends to talk and hang out with.
Jim got out of Sam's lap and took another burluk. He then went over to Spock and held it out in front of him, "Here Spock you have one too." He said shyly.
Spock didn't know what to do. He looked to his mother for guidance. She indicated that he should accept the burluk. So he did. When he reached for it their hands brushed briefly and Spock felt a slight tingling feeling.
"Thank you, Jim for the burluk." Spock thanked him and ate it.
Jim smiled hugely and went back to sit on Sam's lap. The two adults talked while the children sat and listened.
"So Spock? How old are you?" Winona asked him after a while.
"I am nine point two three Terran years old." Spock responded.
"Wonderful! You're only a few years older then Jim then." She told him.
This confused Spock since Jim looked much younger than that. But before he could question it Jim spoke up, "Mom? Can Spock and I go play in my room?" He asked politely.
"As long as it's okay with Amanda and he wants to."
Jim turned puppy dog eyes to Spock and his mother.
"I'm completely fine with it!" Amanda said cheerfully.
"I shall accompany you to your room Jim." Spock said. He doesn't completely understand it, but Spock wishes to spend more time with the human boy.
"Awesome! Come on!" Jim grabs Spock's sleeve and brings him to his room, "Okay so I have Kal-toh and chess. Which do you want to play?" Jim asked Spock. It surprised Spock that Jim has Kal-toh, but pleased nonetheless.
"Let us play Kal-toh. I do not know how to play chess." Spock chose.
"Okay! Hey, maybe sometime I could teach you how to play chess."
"That will be acceptable."
Jim giggled and set up his Kal-toh. The two boys sat down on the floor facing each other. Spock went first. They played in silence for about twenty minutes until Jim asked, "So Spock, what's Vulcan like?"
"Vulcan has a considerably higher gravity, thinner atmosphere, and higher temperatures than Earth. The climate is generally harsh, with most of the surface comprising large deserts or mountain ranges, along with scattered small seas. Desert areas are prone to large amounts of heat, light, and electrical sandfire storms."
"Electrical sandfire storms? I wonder what that'll be like?" Jim pondered. And Spock had a furious protective urge over Jim as he thought about the smaller boy being caught up in the almost always fatal storm, "They are fatal storms, so I urge you to not seek them out." Spock said sternly.
"Okay, Spock I promise not to." Jim smiled, and they continued to play. This time it was Spock's turn to ask a question, "If you do not mind me asking Jim, but how old are you?"
"I just turned seven a few weeks ago." Jim answered as he flashed a smile at the older boy. Jim was definitely smart for his age Spock thought to himself, as the game went on for awhile more.
In the end Spock had won, but Jim was very close to beating him. The boys were going to play again, but Spock's mom then came in saying she and Spock had to get going. "Oh." Jim said disappointed, "I will see you later right Spock?" Jim looked so hopeful.
"Of course Jim." Spock agreed.
"Yay! Okay bye Spock!" Jim waved goodbye and Spock waved back.
"Goodbye Jim."
Spock went home with his mother and that night he decided to have his father take him to a mind healer because he has a hunch he wishes to confirm.
