Elena walked around the mansion, she was used to this place after many years of living into it. Sometimes she liked her life there, sometimes she hated that she was not exactly allowed to go out.
Well, she did not blame Klaus. She was well aware that the hunter's curse was dangerous for her and for the people around her.
It was not much, really took her three years to fully recover, the rest of staying was pretty much her choice.
And not letting her go was Klaus'
Altruism, Klaus was not really good at when it comes to invisible meanings of the words. So altruism was not his strongest trait.
Elena would beg differ
One day, it was such a random and normal day, Elena was laying down next to Klaus. Her hand tracing his upper torso. Klaus could never say why she would ever show affection.
"Will you ever get tired of my scheming?"
"I don't think so" Her voice soft yet genuine, it had some hope in it, he thought. "You know, I might start sleeping next to you every night"
"Why?" Elena asked softly with a little chuckle, making sure he was comfortable enough to answer her. "You sooth those nightmares, you know"
"I can guess" Elena did not wish make it complicated or unsettled. Usually agreeing and nodding worked but some days were harder than the others. Elena could sense this day was also harder in a way.
"Elena, why would not you leave?"
"I have everything I want here" Elena knew the questions he can throw through her way, it was not her first time of dealing with everything he had been going through. "Do you mean it?"
"I do, with my whole heart" Klaus just nodded, looking at her with something. It was something, Elena knew it was a progress when it was about Klaus. "Do you love me Elena?"
Elena trailed a second, looking at him as if her answer was depending on his facial expression and features. "I assume so"
"You are not sure"
"I do not know what is love, I just know what I feel for you is different than what I felt for Stefan or Damon" Klaus then smiled softly, nodding his head as well. "Then we are safe, love"
"I assume so" She said again, looking at him. She did not bother to ask if he loved her back or something. She knew the answer and she learned not to ask the questions she knew the answers of, all by experience. Because some things were meant to be unsaid.
"Do you think I am a monster?" Elena decided to take the other road. She did not object, it was only temporarily when she objected his insecurities and she was aware that they needed something more secure than that. "Do you see yourself as one?"
"I assume so" Elena nodded in understanding, her hand tracing his cheek. "Do you have a heart, beating for someone?"
Klaus frowned and looked at her in confusion, yet he still gave in and nodded. Then Elena shrugged, placing a kiss upon his forehead. "So I hardly doubt you are a monster"
"What if I lost the one my heart is beating for?" She now smiled sadly and shook her head. "If you were ever to, you will still have their memories. They will be something worth to feel and love"
"Since when you got this good at being my personal therapist?"
"Ever since I've cared, makes it longer than you may think" Klaus nodded with a chuckle, he was aware that she was getting some of her vocabulary from him.
"I will always care, Klaus" Klaus frowned with the sudden assurance but nodded, did not prey much. Elena was glad, they had this thing where they were both more understandable to each other without talking.
Elena knew Klaus, he was like that. One day he would be the party animal of the town and the other day Elena could not even see his face in the same house.
Back when it was her first months of finally being free of the curse, she was confused why Klaus was in his room and never leaving.
She walked upstairs, it was weird to be sharing a house with Klaus and only them being in the house. For some reason she was feeling the safest around him.
She knocked the door, walking slowly inside. She saw him later, a drink in his hand and watching her closely. "Is something wrong Elena?"
"I was worried, you have been in your room all day. Is everything alright?" Klaus raised his eyebrows. The thunderstorm and a whole temper tantrum Elena was expecting never came, instead there was a soft look upon his face. "I have been thinking. Would not you sit down with me love?"
Elena was slightly taken aback when she heard his offer, yet she sat down. She looked at the drink that was held out for her, his drink. She took a sip before giving the glassware back.
"Well love, you see, even I need to think of somethings sometimes" Elena nodded, looking at the painting all around the house. "I like your paintings"
"I appreciate sweetheart" Elena nodded, looking around still. Something made her much shy to dare to look into his eyes directly. "There is something in you, simply, inspires something in me. Other than the woman whom you shared your face with, you make me want to see the goodness in one"
The most heartfelt thing ever she had heard from Niklaus was that, Elena could simply say. She still remembered how she blushed and she felt his glance upon her, lips turning into a smirk.
"You are beautiful"
"I bet you've said this to the other two"
"I told them that they are pretty" Elena tilted her head as he stood up and slowly walking through the door and Elena knew it was now or never. She sped in front of him and the last thing they remembered before the lust and love took over was how good it felt.
So yeah, if Klaus said there was no altruism in him, Elena would beg differ.
