EARLY CHILDHOOD AND GROWING UP
Albert DeSalvo had a difficult upbringing, living with his four siblings and a father who was a physically abusive alcoholic. DeSalvo's father would frequently bring home prostitutes and engage in sexual acts with them in front of his wife and children.
Years after being discharged from the army for disobeying orders, he eventually settled down and married Irmgard Beck, a girl from Germany. They lived a relatively modest life, and despite Irmgard having a handicapped child, they managed to sustain themselves. Being aware that DeSalvo was highly sexed, Irmgard tried to avoid intercourse with her husband for fear of having another handicapped baby. However, their second child was a healthy boy, and DeSalvo appeared to become a conscientious family man who was both liked and appreciated by his colleagues and his boss.
EARLIER CRIMES
The young DeSalvo began torturing animals as a child and started shoplifting and stealing in early adolescence, frequently crossing paths with the law.
