You sat down on the wooden bench. It was winter, so no one was outside, except a couple quiditch players who decided to train. They were Gryffindors, you noticed. Thank god they didn't see you, or else you'd be forced to play quiditch in the snow.
You liked peace moments like these, where no one bothered you. If it wasn't that cold, maybe you could've fallen asleep on that bench. But, unfortunately, it was that cold ; and you didn't even take your scarf or coat.
You sighed, preparing yourself to leave the quiet outdoor and to go back to the loud castle. But just as you were about to start walking towards the school, you noticed something. Someone. People.
The quiditch players had stopped playing. In fact, they probably didn't even start. They were now gathered around someone.
You decided to check what was going on, even thoug you knew you had, if they were picking on someone, to not get involved. If you did, it'd compromise your position as captain and you couldn't let that happen.
As you were getting closer, you started to hear what they were saying.

One of your teammates' voice( Sarah Laine's) was the first one you heard.
'Why are you so attached to it ? Just give that disgusting thing to us already !'
Someone replied.
'You don't understand, he needs my help ! I can't let him die. And he's not disgusting, you're just-'
You marched on a branch. You haven't noticed it until after the boy stopped talking, and after the whole group turned to face you.
'What's going on here ?'
'That kid's got some weird creature and he won't even show it to us' Paul Maycey replied.
The said-kid looked indignant.
'That's not true ! You- you wanted to take him.'

You honestly felt bad for him, but they needed to not see it. You thought for a minute about how you were going to get them to go back into the school.
'Anyway, let's get going. It's almost dinner time and you guys still have to pack.'

It was common knowledge that you never came home during breaks. It wasn't that you didn't have good parents or that they mistreated you in any way, you just didn't felt as safe there as in Hogwarts.

Although a couple of them rolled their eyes, they all followed you silently. Before leaving his eyesight, you smiled at the boy, it being your way of apologising you couldn't help him more.
For the first time, you questioned your "popularity".
Was it worth it if it meant basically ignoring bullying, which was totally against your values ? Before going back to the gryffindor dorm, you asked Sarah the boy's name.
'What ? That guy? Why ?'
'Just tell me' you replied, with an angrier tone that the one you've wished to employ.
'Newton Scamand..or Scamander ? Yeah, it's Scamander. His brother's a prefect.'
'Which house ?' You had grabbed her wrist without even noticing.
'Hufflepuff. Can I go now ?'
'Yeah. Enjoy your meal.' You said with a fake smile.
'Are you not coming ?'
'Not hungry.'
You hurried to leave, not wanting to suffer another one of her lectures about how the captain needed to maintain an healthy alimentation. She was a year older than you, and she seemed to not be pleased with you becoming the captain.

The next morning was a rough one. Your eyes had, for some reason, decided not to stay open. You would've missed potion class if it weren't for Luke.
Luke was your best friend. You knew him since childhood. He was the insecure type and he didn't like to be surrounded by a lot of people, even though you didn't quite understand why, since you didn't share these issues.
Luke and you were complete opposites but he was still the only one you could count on. He had dark brown hair and he wore glasses, wich you jokingly mocked sometimes.

So he woke you up ten minutes away from the first class and you didn't even have time to eat. As you entered the classroom, the loudness of the class surprised you. You looked around and figured that, because the teacher didn't arrive yet, everyone was doing whatever they wanted to do.

You noticed the only person in the classroom who wasn't talking loudly with a friend group. The boy from yesterday. Newton, you remembered. He was paying so much attention to the inside of his large pocket that he didn't notice you approaching him.

'What's in there ?' You asked with a large smile.
He just stared at you awkwardly, visibly wondering why you were talking to him.
'What's in there ?' You repeated, this time pointing his pocket to make it clearer.
He looked at you, then at his pocket.
'Oh ! Uh...it's just a..a niffler. A merchant gave it to me, since I promised to take care of him.
He's 8 years old, which is quite a lot for a niffler. Fortunately, he's pretty strong so I'm sure he won't die soon.' He said that very quickly. Newton looked at the creature in a protective way.

You didn't know why but the fact he was so passionate about creatures like this one that no one cared about made you smile.
'His name is-' He stopped, seeing you smiling.
'I'm sorry, it's just that- No one ever asks, so when someone do, I get carried away. I'm sorry.'
'No, don't- don't apologise, I'm genuinely interested in...what's his name ?' You asked.
'Ray !'
'Well, I'm genuinely interested in Ray.'

The two of you stared at each other, that's when you noticed his eyes were green. And a beautiful green.
'You have eyes...' You started, searching a compliment. 'They're...green.'
He chuckled. 'Yes. They are. What's your name ?'
'Y/n. Y/n y/l. And you're Newton Scamander ?'
'No one calls me Newton. Call me Newt.'
'Alright. The teacher's there, Newt.'

The teacher did in fact just entered the room.
The potion class then started.
