Born in Fujiyoshida, Japan, Haruto has always wanted to wrestle after his father made an incredible legacy from WCW, NJPW, and, most notably, Pro Wrestling NOAH.
Getting into the sport was no easy task as Mutoh had to be trained the way his father had been trained. Keiji Mutoh, Haruto's father had trained him to the point that he felt he was ready to carry on the Muta name, but not at the moment because his son had to earn it.
In his first match, Haruto went under his real name, but the problem was that his character was so bland customers didn't want to taste it. Instead of giving up, he dove deep into Japanese mythology, where he would dress as an Oni, or demon from Japan.
His new gimmick won over the audience as Keiji knew his son was read for Haruto to undertake his name, where he was now called Great Muta Jr. The fans approved the name as Haruto's career skyrocketed into superstardom.
One day, when he heard his sister, Ayane Mutoh had her softball career end by very hard blow to her skull from a softball, Haruto immediately felt bad for her and offered her a position as his manager, in the form of a Yurei. Ayane felt reluctant at first, but she accepted it by donning a geisha look with eyes of evil.
In her debut appearance, at the end of the match, Haruto's opponent walked over to his sister and before he could say a word, she spat green mist into his face, blinding him, giving Haruto the advantage to get the victory.
Creating this alliance made perfect sense as Haruto and Ayane would go to any company that hired them, New Japan, where he would win the World Championship on two occasions and the Intercontinental Title on four occasions, NOAH, where he was the GHC Heavyweight Champion four times, AJPW, as a three time Triple Crown World Champion before having a stint in Ring of Honor, where he would win the ROH Championship and would hold it for 390 days before dropping it to Jay Lethal.
Now, feeling they've done enough in Japan, Ayane and Haruto appear in NXT, ambushing Johnny Gargano and his wife Candice, making an immediate impact with their presence at Takeover: Toronto.
