It was a beautiful evening in Covington, Georgia. The orange and red sunset painted the sky so vibrant that it could be seen from miles away. The bugs flew by in every direction, rushing to do their job. The weather was perfect at this hour. Cold enough to be free, yet warm enough to enjoy. The trees barely swaying with the breeze. I adored it when we had days like this. I was standing upon the front porch, enjoying the simplicity of this all. As I turned to go back into my home, that looked more like a small shack or cabin even, I saw a flash of something. It appeared only for a split second. If I had blinked in that moment, I would have missed it. From what I could see, it was almost like a black cloud. Nothing suspicous ever happened in this town, so I reminded myself that the mind is a powerful thing and just assumed I was making this up. I stepped inside and made a quick glance around the small room just inside the door. I saw nothing. Just as I thought. Before my mind could start thinking of anymore crazy things, the phone rang. It was my best friend, jennifer. I reached for the phone to answer it.
"Hello?" I said.
"Hey. Please tell me you dpn't have plans tonight."
"I didn't, but I was hoping to have a quiet evening at home."
"Ughhhh. No. There's this really cool party going on tonight and your going."
"Jen, I don't know...I really don't want to go out tonight."
"Clary, your 23, literally never go out, and your bored at home."
"I'm not bored. I enjoy the peace thank you very much."
"Too bad. Look, I don't want you to look back at these days and wish you had done so much more. I just want you to have fun while you can."
"Where is this thing even at?"
"It's at my friend, Darrens house."
"That guy, really?"
"I know you don't like him but c'mon..getting invited to one of his partys is something everybody wishes could happen to them."
"Actually, I can't stand the guy..he's a fuck boy that drinks, partys, and uses girls..he's fucking disgusting."
"....yeah...So..will you come?"
"Jen!"
"Clary! Please." She pouted. "I don't wanna go alone."
"Fine. What time is it?"
"8:00."
"You better hurry then..It takes you forever to get ready for partys and it's already 6:45."
"Shit! I gotta go get ready but I'll pick you up at 7:50."
"Okay..love you." I said, sounding lifeless due to what I just agreed to.
"Love you too, bye!!!"
I sighed as I hung up the phone. If you couldn't tell, jennifer was a party girl. She goes to partys almost every weekend and has tried to get me to go one forever. Partys aren't my thing. I can't stand not being able to hear myself think over the loud music. And don't even get me started at the smell of vomit in the corner from the girl that thought she could stomach a full solo cup of jack. But, Jennifers my best friend, I know she wants to be able to do stuff like this with me, so i'll tolerate it for her.
I had just got out of the shower. I went to my closet and found some baggy, ripped jeans. I found a gray metallica t-shirt so I threw that on. I decided to add a letterman jacket, and I put on some white campus style adidas. I put my hair into two dutch braids. I never really put on makeup, so I just put on some clear mascara and chapstick. I heard a car so I assumed it was Jennifer. I looked outside from my bedroom window, but the car that was in my driveway wasn't Jennifers. I couldn't tell what kind of car it was but it was tan. I tried to see who was in the car but it just looked like a black blob. I ran downstairs, and once I got to the window at the door, the car was gone. It was strange but I didn't question it. It could have just been someone who was lost and turned around in my driveway. I tried not the over think it. I turned to go get some water while I waited for Jennifer to get here. By the time I got my water and opened it, Jennifer pulled up. She came bursting through the front door. "Who's ready to par-tayyyyyyyy!" She said, so giggly and excited. "You." I said, still lifeless. "C'mon Clary!! Please cheer up. I don't want to bring you down. You don't have to go if you don't want to." Even though I didn't want to, I started thinking about what she said on the phone earlier.."I just want you to have fun while you can" echoed in my mind. I was thinking maybe it wouldn't be so bad after all. "No jen..I wanna go, I really do. I just...I don't know, I guess it's just hard for me to get into the idea of it since I don't do this."
"Don't worry..I'm gonna make sure this is the best party you've ever been to!!""I hope so...I'm not making any promises but maybe, just maybe, if I have fun at this party I'll start going to more partys with you."
"YASSS."
"Hey..I said maybe..now, let's get this show on the road, we don't wanna be late!" We walked out out the door and headed to her car. The ride there was mostly about all the things she wanted us to do when we go there. I told her my only goal is to stay away from Darren. She said she doesn't understand why I dislike him so much, but it's not that hard to see why.
We made it to the party and there was no where to park except on the side of the street. When we finally parked, I started getting a little anxious. I knew that there would be a lot of people here, but facing it was a different story. We walked up to the door and went inside. Oh boy, here we go.
