I just don't get it

I just don't get it. I don't get it at all. Sofia isn't my sister or half-sister or whatever the hell Mom said. It's just a joke; all of this shit's a joke!

I kicked a shoe box that was on my floor.

Why did Mom lie to me? And why did it have to be such a ridiculous lie? I've only just seen Mrs. Hawthorne for the first time today. The only mother I remember is my actual mother.

Since this obviously was a lie, what was my mom and Mrs. Hawthorne hiding from me and Sofia?

Y'know what? First thing in the morning, I'm gonna find my birth certificate and shove it in my mom's face that I know she's lying then she'll be forced to tell me the truth.

:::

I hit the loud alarm clock as I yawned, not ready to start the day yet. I covered my face with my black comforter because once I see some light, I wasn't gonna go back to sleep.

I heard the door creak open as my mom said, "Mayo, time to get up."

I mentally rolled my eyes while laying there. Couldn't she see that I didn't wanna get up?

"Mayo—"

I pushed the comforter off of my head while sitting up. "Quit calling me that," I snapped. "I'm not a little baby anymore."

"O-Oh. . ." Mom blinked a few times taken aback. "I-I'm sorry. . . Mateo." She walked toward the door. "But um breakfast is on the table downstairs. I have to get to work early so I won't be able to eat with you this time."

"Great." Once Mom's face dropped, I noticed that I said that out loud. "That's. . . I-I didn't mean—"

"Bye." Mom shut the door softly. I could've sworn I heard her sniffle, but who really cares?

I sat up and stretched my arms. I sighed while dropping them and jumping down off the bed. I grabbed some underwear and towels before going into the bathroom. Since Mom wasn't here, I hooked Spotify up to the Alexa and played my Rod Wave playlist while showering.

I hummed "Heart on Ice" as I got ready for school. I'm guessing the plan to get my birth certificate was a no go for now since Mom left early. But if I said I was mad about her not being here, I would be lying straight through my teeth. Now, don't get me wrong, I love my momma with everything in me, but I hated being lied to, and right now she's lying hard as hell. I just didn't want to have to sit through her trying to start conversation awkwardly and then me not answering because I was mad; it just wouldn't end well for either of us.

I texted Sofia to see if I'd still be picking her up today. I prayed as I went down the stairs that her answer would be yes because we haven't gotten to talk since the whole dinner thing.

As I fixed myself a plate, my phone dinged. I gasped as I dropped the plate on the table. I took a moment to gather myself before unlocking the phone.

Sofia 💙 — Yes, but I told my mom that I'll be walking to school so park around the block.

I liked her message before turning on the TV. I couldn't eat food without watching something. My mom said it was a serious problem, but I highly doubted it. I just wanted to be entertained for the ten minutes I was gonna be eating.

I quickly brushed my teeth, flossed, rinsed mouth wash, and put in an extra breath mint as I exited the house. I got into my black Kia with a smile. I was super exited to see Sofia. We haven't decided if we were dating or not yet, but I'm sure we'll get around to it soon. Soph said she didn't wanna rush into anything so we're taking it as slow as we can.

I intentionally drove the long way to get to Sofia's house so her mom wouldn't spot me outside. I texted Sofia that I was around the block and turned up the music on the radio. In about two seconds, she knocked on the door. I grinned while unlocking them. I would've gotten out to open the door, but then her mom might spot me for real.

"Hey." I locked the doors and turned down the radio.

Sofia smiled before pulling me toward herwith a fist full of my black Nike t-shirt. Her lips were soft like a pillow and tasted like the cherry chapstick she was obsessed with. The kiss was like a breath of fresh air.

She pulled away, still holding on to my shirt. "I missed you."

I panted while staring at her pink, plump lips. "I missed you too." I went in for another kiss, but she dodged it. "Soph. . ."

"We're gonna be late." She giggled, letting go of my shirt.

I sighed disappointedly while shifting the gear to 'drive.' "Listen. . . I-I just wanted to say that I'm sorry about last night."

"No need to apologize." I heard her shift in the seat. "My mom was livid. She took my phone and wanted to delete your number so I had to change your contact name."

"Damn. What'd your dad think?" I was honestly so fucking scared to meet her dad. Especially after all this shit that's happening, I'm sure he'd kill my ass.

"He. . . well, he didn't do anything. I don't think he knew."

"So, they're keeping stuff from him too? There's some shady crap goin' on." I stopped at a red light.

Sofia nodded her head. "I agree. We should figure out the real reason why they don't want us to date."

I gulped. "Wha. . . w-we're dating?" I wiped the sweat on my forehead as the light turned green.

"Duh. Keep up, Mat."

"B-but we never formally—"

"You're my boyfriend, Mateo Brown. How more formal can it get?" Sofia giggled.

I smiled slightly as I pulled into the school parking lot. Mom and Mrs. Hawthorne better watch out 'cause we're gonna get to the bottom of this whether they want us to or not.
