Leaving the woods has everyone feeling a little bit better than the night before. Though dread still looms as they're out of food and only two bottles worth of formula left for the baby. That won't even last him a whole day, so when a town came into view, Ken and Nate felt like cheering. Maybe their luck has finally turned in their favor after all. They get into town, taking out a few infected as they go. It's a small town, the roads littered with crashed cars and long since dried blood. There's even a few skeletal remains strewn about.
Even now, it's still a sight they all dread coming across. They try to ignore it as they tredge on. Ken keeps Oliver's face away from the horrific sight. They split into two groups to check the nearest stores. Mark, Ken, Dan, and Thomas in one group, and Cry, Minx, and Nate in the other. The groups disperse and Nate follows Cry and Minx into the small pawn shop, hoping they'll at least find something useful. Ken's group heads into a gas station across the street, food being their hopeful find.
Mark and Thomas check the rows as Ken checks the back with Dan. It looks like the small town was hit fast, because there's still some food and water left. Mark and Thomas stuff as much of it as they can into their backpacks, which is pretty much all of it. There's not an abundance, but there's enough and their backpacks have gotten quite empty. Ken and Dan check the back offices, but don't find much, not even a weapon or first aid. Ken sighs and scratches his beard as he looks everything over again for anything useful.
Dan tosses the book he found on the desk, "Bunch of useless junk. No one survived in here, there's nothing we can use."
"Yeah, you're right," Ken sighs, "Let's go see what the others have found."
They leave the offices and reconvene with Mark and Thomas to take inventory. Across the street, Cry, Minx, and Nate are acouring the pawn shop for anything useful. Most of what's here is just a bunch of junk, but they each find some useful things. Cry finds some clothes at least some of them can wear, so he grabs them as he continues looking. Nate finds a few knives and a pistol, though there's no ammo.
He takes the gun anyway, at the very least he can bash the brains of an infected with it. Minx finds an assortment of sewing supplies and bandaids and puts them in her back. At the very least, the thread and needles can be used in case any of them ends up needing stitches. They meet back up after the sweep of the store is finished and Cry smiles lightly, "Find anything good?"
"Just some bandaids, thread and needles." Minx shrugs, "Everything here is pretty much junk."
"I found some hunting knives. And a gun, but no ammo." Nate replies, "She's right, pretty much everything else is junk."
Cry nods, "I got some clothes, not enough for all of us, though."
"Let's go see what Mark's group found." Minx urges and the three of them leave the pawn shop.
Meeting back up, they all reveal what they found. They'll have to keep scavenging, because they still don't have any more formula for Oliver and when he starts crying for food, the infected will come. So they continue on, spotting a supermarket up ahead. They take down a few more infected as they make their way there and eventually they come to their destination, but not before fighting more of the infected loitering in the parking lot. A few cars are sitting in the parking spaces and Mark hums, "Think any of them have any gas or keys left?"
"I doubt the gas will work anymore." Nate comments, looking around, "And I highly doubt the keys are still there."
"It can't hurt to take a look." Cry muses.
"At least we can say we did try then." Thomas nods, "So who wants to check which car?"
They each check a car, and surprise surprise, none of them have anything they need to work. Nate sighs, "Told you guys."
Mark shrugs, "It was worth a shot."
"Would have been nice to have a car again, though." Ken muses, "Alright, let's head inside and see what we can find. Stay close, and if any of you see more infected than we can handle, we all get out together, got it?"
Everyone agrees, and Ken leads the way inside, gun at the ready, the two bullets he has left in the chamber and ready to fire. The supermarket is dark and quiet and everyone splits off into groups of two to scout for supplies and enemies. Mark goes with Thomas, Ken and Nate stick together, and Cry, Minx, and Dan stay together since they don't want to leave Dan by himself. Ken goes to the nearest shelf and starts looking for baby food and formula. Nate sticks close by him and peers around a corner. His heart skips a beat and his eyes widen as he comes face to face with the decaying flesh of an infected face staring back at him. To his horrified surprise, the infected woman doesn't immediately rip into his face with her teeth. She just stares at him and groans, clicking her teeth lightly before her neck snaps as she turns and keeps walking back towardss the other side of the shelf. Nate holds his breath and keeps looking, squinting to see if he can see any more when suddenly he's startled by Ken walking up behind him and whispering, "See anything?"
Nate lets out a soft startled gasp before turning to Ken, about to tell him off for sneaking up on him but he's stopped when the infected woman suddenly turns back to them and then she roars, sprinting at them, her joints creaking with every movement she makes. Ken raises his gun, but it's hard to aim in the dark and he doesn't want to wait for her to get too close to fire, especially with Nate standing right in front of him and little Oli still strapped to his chest. To his surprise, Nate is the one who moves, tackling the woman and pinning her to the ground.
Ken's eyes widen when he sees two more infected run at him from down the aisle, roaring and snapping their teeth as well. He hears gun shots ring out across the store and then more roaring of the undead. Before he knows it, he's lost Nate in the crowd and he's forced to shoot his gun. One infected falls, two more are sprinting towards him. He hears no screams, only the undead. He takes a step back, steeling himself as Oliver cries loudly. One bullet left, where's Nate?
