Maya never knew she had a sister until last year. Her adopted parents never mentioned her past and where she came from. She was perfectly content with how things were until she began experiencing weird things. Her parents had no idea what to do with her and why all of a sudden she was able to make things appear or disappear. The final straw was when Maya accidentally turned her mother into a raccoon. After Maya was able to reverse the spell, her adopted parents decided that she was too much trouble and too dangerous. They had no idea what was going on with Maya and were completely hopeless in trying to "fix" her. Because of how religious her adopted family is, they decided that something was wrong with her but refused to talk about any of the magical things that happened. They believed that if it was not uttered into the universe that maybe the problem would go away. Unfortunately the accidents became-more and more frequent.
Eventually they found Maya's biological father, Francisco Alonso. Sadly, Maya's biological mother died when she was three. They also found out that Maya was a fraternal twin, and her twin sister was named Emma. According to what Francisco told the family, Maya was given up for adoption because they knew they could only financially provide for one child and wanted her to be well cared for. In reality, Maya's biological mother was a witch and knew that once she saw the star birthmarks on her children that she would have to give one up. In all of the history of witches, there has never been two chosen ones. It was dangerous and unknown to the world, the witches council would never approve of two chosen ones. It was the safest option to have one of the twins in another family in hopes of hiding her true identity. When Maya's adopted parents met the Alonso family, they decided that with all the problems she had been causing, that maybe it would be best if she got to live with Emma.
Maya started living with Emma and Francisco this past summer. After she accidentally turned Emma's glitter into little spiders one scrapbooking night, Emma had to explain to Maya why all these weird things were happening. She was a witch, and possibly also a chosen one. Emma assumed Maya was because of them being twins but her star shaped birthmark on her shoulder confirmed those beliefs.
Emma and Maya became closer over the summer and Maya was introduced to her best friend Andi. Andi and Maya got along right away because of their love for zombies and horror. Maya was grateful she had two friends she could trust, especially when it came to magic. Funnily enough, Maya is almost too good at rhyming words. Like when she turned Andi into a princess by accidentally rhyming it with the word "impress." Andi didn't talk to her for two hours.
Emma, Maya, and Andi decided to keep Maya being Emma's twin a secret. Once they told Andi about how they were technically both chosen ones, they knew it was too dangerous for anyone else to know, especially considering the danger Emma had last year with the principal. Not even Lily, Emmas guardian, would know about how they were sisters. They all decided to introduce Maya as Emma's cousin. The people in the know about magic would just think that Maya was another ordinary witch, magic being passed through the Alonso family tree.
