The warm sunlight casting a glare onto a sleeping Hope is what woke her up. She prefers to leave the window open when she paints at night so the goosebumps rising on her arms from the brisk breeze doesn't alarm her. Events of last night came back slowly and lazily. Her eyelids weighed tons as if she didn't sleep at all. After Josie left abruptly, Hope had nothing left to do but lay in silence.  She curled into herself and let the tears fall freely as she remembered what had happened.

That was when the guilt set in.

Landon.

her boyfriend.

Who was technically still angry with her, however, no matter how angry he was, Landon did not deserve to get cheated on. She loved him, she was sure. After everything they had been through this year, getting to be with him was like a breath of fresh air. It was easy and safe.

She needed to be safe.

Josie was not safe. She was exciting and passionate. Being with her was reckless and exhilarating all at the same time.

After an hour of laying in bed, tossing restlessly as she thought about what to do with Landon and Josie, she heard a knock on her door.

"Hope, could you stop by my office on the way to class?".

The first thing she thought of was that Josie went and told everyone that Hope has a biting kink or worse, She's more like her father than people have let on. The more she thought about the twin going around and blabbing to everyone, the less that became plausible. At the very least, she trusted that Josie would keep this little endeavor safe between the two of them. She had always admired how long her friend was able to keep her feelings tucked in a locked box before they erupted.

It scared her too.

She reluctantly gathered the strength to get up, and trudged over to her bathroom. Having the luxury of basically paying for this school out of her dead father's pockets, meant she not only got a single room but also a private place to get ready. She took a moment to look at herself in the fogged-up window. She was tired of constantly being battered by a multitude of unforeseen challenges. Hope deserved a break. She put on her bravest monotoned face and headed out into the hallway. The wolf avoided the gazes of everyone that passed her by, not wanting to accidentally run into her boyfriend's friends or worse Josie.

Alaric was seated at his desk on the phone with someone or another clearly distraught. She sat in the mustard yellow chair on the opposite side of him, picking at her cuticles ready to get this over with.

"I understand this is a big ask, and that you are very busy Jeremy, but he cannot just be out there alone again. All I am asking is that you keep an eye on him every once in a while..."

Silence.

"Well if we're being technical here, Landon is a Phoenix, but it is all so new and we don't know the full limitations yet. I will pay you double-.."

More silence.

"Yep, I understand thank you, have a great day". He hung up the phone and took a swig at the brown liquid sitting in a whiskey cup and promptly set it down with a dull thunk. Rubbing his temples he began to explain why Hope was called in,

"Turns out, Landon has decided to go on another one of his 'quests' without our permission. He told Raf that he would be back in a couple of days, and just needed to take a breather. I figured you would want to know. Please I beg of you, do not search for him. We desperately need you here." Alaric drones on as if the events that took place on the phone didn't shock him.
