It was Friday, movie night. Every week, the kids picked a theme. This time, they chose Halloween and horror.
So you and Rosinante were responsible for the decoration and the snacks. It was fun and you both worked very well together. There was just some kind of connection between the two of you, which made work more fun.
— Have you ever heard about the legend? — Rosinante asked, holding the large orange plate while you filled it with all kinds of candy: chocolate bars, marshmallows, gummy bears and lollipops.
— What legend? — you raised an eyebrow and started to laugh. — What, does a creepy monster live in the woods? — you mocked. — Maybe a serial killer like the one from Friday the 13th? Spooky!
The blonde shook his head and let out a giggle.
— No, silly. That would be crazy. Like, serial killers? Really? — after a second of silence, he completed. — It's more like a ghost, spirit, entity... Whatever you want to call it.
— Rosinante, seriously? — you kept laughing, even harder now. You carefully placed the candies to make them look aesthetically pleasing at least. You sat on the chair behind you. — Okay, tell me the legend about the creepy and evil ghost.
Your friend cleared his throat, getting ready to tell the story. Of course, it didn't happen to him, but another counselor that heard from another counselor, told him. Everyone swears that this is true, and at least one counselor says they had an encounter with this entity. You crossed your arms and waited for Rosinante to start.
— It all started about 50 years ago, before this camp became Camp Sunny Side. It was a camp for teenagers, mostly. Do you know what happened? — you shook your head in a negative answer. — One night, some of them decided to play with an ouija board. It was something silly, right? After playing, things seemed to be back to normal, until a boy started to feel haunted by something. People said he was hearing voices for days, and at some point, he couldn't handle it anymore, and when everyone was sleeping at 3 AM, he rushed towards the woods, going where the voices told him to go. — his voice sounded so mysterious, as if he wanted to add a creepy touch to the story. — He was never found, and everyone searched for weeks.
— That's a very sad story, Rosinante, and it's very mysterious too. But I don't see anything about ghosts or anything creepy at all. — you were about to get up and finish preparing the decoration for the little party when the blonde lifted a finger, as if he was telling you to wait.
— Wait, there's more. — you sat again instantly, waiting for the rest. — Ever since that happened, some campers started having nightmares, hearing footsteps, cries for help... Some of them said they saw the boy at night, in the woods just standing there as if he could look deep into their souls.
You shook your head and rubbed your arms, trying to hide your shiver. For some reason, this whole ghost thing was giving you the creeps.
— But they said it didn't look like him anymore, his mouth was... — you interrupted him before Corazon could say anything else.
— Okay, okay. Enough with ghost stories for tonight. Let's go put these plates on the hall.
Your friend giggled and hugged you from behind, making you wide your eyes in surprise and your heart beat faster. Your cheeks started to burn, but you wouldn't dare to move. His embrace was too comfortable.
— It's just a silly camp legend because the owners didn't want to admit they were too broke after the boy went missing, and had to sell the camp to others to turn it into the Sunny Side. Don't worry, it's not even real.
You nodded and went to the hall, while Rosinante followed you holding some decorations. Not to your surprise, he fell while walking, smashing some little pumpkins in the process.
You sat behind the campers with the other counselors. Once in a while, you'd brush your hand on his while trying to get more popcorn or trying to find your glass. It could sound cliché, but it felt like a wave of energy ran through your body whenever you touched him.Maybe this meant something.
The movie wasn't too scary, after all, they were kids. But about ten minutes before the ending, the power went off. Which was very weird, since it wasn't windy or raining.
— Don't we have a power generator? — you asked Rosinante, while using your cell phone flashlight. He shook his head. — No?!
— We used to, but it stopped working last summer, I guess they never fixed it. — he shrugged. — Why? Are you afraid of the dark?
You swallowed and shook your head in a negative answer. Maybe Corazon would mock you for that, who knows.
— Let's go, let's take the kids to the cabins together so you won't be alone in the dark. — Rosinate got up and took your hand, helping you get up.
Having his company while walking in the middle of the woods, in the dark at night, was really helpful. You felt safe with him, and he was making you and the kids laugh so much, you even forgot about the legend from earlier.
It felt like his happy energy could make every bad thought or spirit go away.
After every kid was in their own cabins, you walked until you stopped in front of the main cabin.
— Hey, (Y/N), I just want to say that I'm sorry about the legend. I didn't mean to creep you out. — he whispered and looked at you in an apologetic way. — Are we good?
— Of course, silly! — you smiled and softly punched his arm. — After all... It's not real, right?
Rosinante smiled and nodded.
— Come on, we need to clean the mess... In the dark, great. — you opened the door and went inside.
The other counselors were asleep already. And that'd be the last time you'd offer to clean everything after a party or movie night.
It was hard to do everything with just flashlights, but both of you were doing your best.
While you were gathering the napkins and cups that were used and throwing them into the plastic bag, a noise got your attention. When you locked eyes with Corazon, you knew that he had heard the same thing. You gulped.
— It's probably someone, right? — you whispered, trying to reassure yourself.
— For sure, someone is probably just... Trying to go get water. I'm sure it's nothing. — the man tried, but he wasn't so sure of what he was saying anymore.
You nodded and continued doing what you were doing at first. This time, it was harder to concentrate.
Another noise, louder and closed this time, made you rush towards Corazon, hugging him to find comfort without even noticing it. The blonde wrapped his arms around you, trying to make you feel safe. He rested his chin on the top of your head and you closed your eyes, as if you were afraid to see something.
— I think... They found the kitchen. It's probably nothing... — he repeated. — I'm sure it's just another counselor.
— Are you sure?
— ... No. — you looked at him with wide eyes, not expecting such honesty. — Come on, we can finish this tomorrow. Let's go, I'll take you to your room.
You both rushed upstairs, and of course, Rosinante tripped. You held his hand and helped him to get up quickly, since you didn't want to be in that hall anymore.
When you arrived in front of your room, you both stopped and took a deep breath, feeling like you were safe now. You were so close to each other still, you could feel his warmth.
— Rosi, can we make a deal? — you whispered, not making eye contact. He hummed. — No more ghost stories for now.
