Esmeralda spent the first few years of her meager existence on her own, shying away from other bird flocks. Even though her carrion mind had taken flight over her human one,she still shied away, believing herself to be even below the creatures. Assuming this form was a way of punishing her for the difference that tore her family apart. A difference that ripped her mother from them and into a mental ward where she ranted on about her daughter being the devil's child.
The form she took, the raven is commonly symbolized as an ill omen to those whose path they may cross and death as well as being said to be the ghosts of the murdered and damned souls bound to earth for eternity.
She felt bound for eternity, it was like being trapped in a prison cell counting down the days before parole, but of course there would be no early release for good behavior on her account. She was bound right up until the moment when the spell would be broken.
