Sofia's POV:

This morning had begun terribly.

My idiotic brother had managed to get himself into trouble, again, and now we were stuck at the train station, desperately trying to find him and put an end to his ridiculous plan to run away from home.

I'd searched every platform, every corner, but it was as if he had vanished. Everyone was worried—Grandmother had even sent for the police. I was just about to return to Mother when I caught a glimpse of familiar brown curls disappearing onto a train, followed a moment later by a terrifying-looking man who sprinted after him.

Panic surged through me.

Realising I was about to lose him, I bolted. I ran faster than I ever had before and leapt onto the moving train just as it left the station. Behind me, I saw Mother break down in tears, our family watching helplessly as I vanished with it, worse off than they had been when we first noticed Flower (Tewkesbury) was gone.

I wandered through carriage after carriage until, finally, I heard his voice. Relief poured over me as I opened the door to find him, sitting wide-eyed and distressed.

"You absolute idiot! What on earth were you thinking? Do you even know how to run away from home? Where would you go? How would you earn a living? How could you imagine leaving me there—alone?"

The girl beside him stood quickly, eyes sharp and ready as if expecting a fight.

"No, no, no—Enola! That's my sister, Sofia. We can trust her. She's here to help—don't worry."

The girl relaxed, offering a polite nod. "My apologies. I'm Enola. I'm also running away, and I saw a man chasing your brother, so I decided to help."

"Thank you, Enola," I said, turning back to my brother. "This idiot doesn't even know how to defend himself, so your help is more than welcome. And as for you, you should've come to me the moment you felt in danger. I could've helped you. Remember, I know people, friends of Father. You're in real danger, and now that we're both runaways, I'm afraid the situation just got worse."

"I'm sorry, Sofia," he whispered. "I was just... scared. I thought if I didn't leave, they'd get to me. And I'd never see you again."

His voice broke, and I couldn't stop the tears from stinging my eyes. I pulled him into a tight hug.

"You'll always see me, you idiot. I'm not going anywhere. I'll keep you safe. I promised Father I would."

Enola sat quietly beside us, watching. There was something kind and steady in her presence. I trusted her.

We'd only just begun to settle when the mood shattered, out the window, we spotted the man again. He was moving from carriage to carriage, checking each one slowly, methodically, and he was getting closer.

"He's found us," I said, already on my feet.

The door burst open, and chaos exploded.

The man lunged. Enola and I fought back with everything we had—Enola was agile and precise; I was fast and furious. But he was strong, nearly throwing my brother out the window in the scuffle. For a terrifying moment, I thought we'd lose him.

We were cornered, breathing hard, out of options.

Then Enola glanced at me, eyes full of mischief and madness.

"Ready?" she asked. "Set—JUMP!"

Without hesitation, we leapt.

We hit the ground with a bone-rattling thud, rolling into the grass. Bruised, breathless, but alive.

Moments later, we were on our feet again, staggering into the nearby woods to find a way to London. None of us spoke for a while, each of us stunned by what we'd just survived.

"How is it," Enola said finally, brushing dirt from her dress, "that you can fight like that, but not your brother?"

"Our father wanted him to learn, especially since he's heir to a title," I explained. "But all he's ever cared about are flowers."

Enola laughed. "So that's why you call him Flower."

"Yes. Father and I always did. Never to mock him. He learnt everything he knows from Father, just like I did. Only... when Father was looking to train someone, he often found me instead. So I trained in his place. I've been learning ever since. To protect Flower. Especially now that Father's gone."

"I understand," Enola said, her expression softening. "My mother taught me to fight. She said the world was dangerous, and she wanted me prepared. Now that she's missing... I realised I have to make my way through it on my own if I ever want to find her."

"Your mother sounds like a wise woman," I said. "And if you're a Holmes, like you say, I doubt all the brains went to your brother. You're smarter than you look."

Enola grinned. "I like you. You've got spirit."

"Now come on," I said, brushing myself off. "Let's find something to eat before my idiot brother dies of starvation."

"I like that—'idiot.' It suits him. Though he does seem more of a nincompoop, really."

"To each their own," I said, smirking.

She laughed at my usual insistence on being right.

After a while of walking and talking, I realised I genuinely enjoyed her company. Enola Holmes was clever, brave, and kind. The kind of person you wanted on your side.

As the two of them began to talk again, Flower blushing more than once, I left them to it and stepped away, wandering under the open night sky. The stars glittered above us, vast and peaceful.

I let the quiet settle over me.

For now, my brother was safe. I had kept my promise to Father. And that was enough.

I stayed close, always watching, just in case someone tried to follow us again. Eventually, wrapped in the comfort of the stars and the knowledge that I had done something right, I drifted off into a deep and dreamless sleep.
