School is not something I enjoy. Although the cliques are few and everyone is pretty cool to each other, I still hate it. Walking though the hallway, my eyes settle on the events happening around me. A couple is making out a few lockers down. Some boys from the football team are pushing each other around and butting heads. But I think what bugs me most is the lack of personal space. The hallway is so crowded that there is no possible way to make it to your next class without a near death experience. Especially if you're short, like me, and you're scared that the tall people will step on you.
The bell rings and I head to chemistry, the one class I share with Macy. I walk through the doors and take a seat next to my lab partners. They're nice, but I would rather be sitting with Macy. As our teacher explains how our end of the year final will take place, I can't help but dream about summer and the endless days I will have at the rink. My thoughts are cut short when an assignment gets placed on my desk. I begin to work on it and wait for class to end.
The end of class draws near and everyone starts to pack up their things. I walk over to Macy. "Hey."
"Hey," she replies. "Are you going to Sarah Cavanuagh's party on Friday."
I laugh at the thought, "No, why would I?" I ask
"Maybe because it would be fun?" She tries to coax me into going.
"I'll probably end up just doing homework this weekend. Maybe hit the rink on Sunday?"
"When's our next practice?" Leave it to Macy to forget our schedule.
"Tomorrow from 3-5." The bell rings and the class starts filing out. Macy says a quick 'bye,' punches me in the arm and proceeds in the direction of her next class.Several classes later, it's finally time for lunch. I make my way to the cafeteria when Clara Ward pushes past me. She's on the cheer squad and is captain of the Kindness Club. Kindness, hah , she is a devil who crawled out of the depths of hell only to make my life miserable.
"Hey Blossom." She mutters as she passes by. She's been calling me that ever since I dyed my hair pink six months ago. I hold a death stare and bite my tongue as she walks by. She is one of the reasons I will not be going to Sarah Cavanaugh's party on Friday. If I went, she'd end up dead.
I grab a few dollars out of my bag and buy a diet coke from the vending machine. I don't want to stand in line, so I'll just steal some of Macy's fries.
"You gonna eat that?" I point to Macy's chocolate pudding as I plop down at the table next to her. "Hell yeah I am. Get your own!" We go through this almost everyday. I ask her if I can eat her food, she says no, then gives me what she doesn't eat. We sit and talk about what movies are playing at the drive in, and how many days are left until summer. Some of our other friends join us and we start throwing almonds at people walking by. Right when I land one in someone's purse, Macy shoves her remaining fries towards me. I smile at her and she tries to shove me off the bench. I shove her back and begin eating the potato goodness.Macy walks with me to my car after the last class of the day and tries to get me to take her to Lilly's. Lilly's is a diner on Main Street that serves the best pie in town. I tell her no because I have to work tonight, but that doesn't stop her from asking again. "Please, you're the only one with a car and I'm too lazy to walk."
"Sorry dude, I have to work later." I think over the pros and cons of taking her. Pros, I can eat pie and avoid responsibility. Cons, I'll have no time for homework. I guess I can always do my homework at the diner, but where's the fun in that?
"Alright, Alright, I'll take you. But you have to buy me a slice of pie."I shouted at her.On our way to Lily's, Macy keeps changing the radio stations and finally settles on a song. I pull into one of the parking spaces and we grab our bags from the back seat. I see members of the cheer team sitting at one of the small tables outside. It's not that I don't like them, I would just prefer not to see people from school.
"Well, well, well. If it isn't Blossom and Buttercup," I hear someone say. Of all the people on the cheer team, the ones we see have to be Clara and her friends.
"Just keep walking," Macy says to me with sad eyes. There's something going on with her, but I just don't know what. Normally Macy would come up with some witty comeback or cuss them out, but for some reason, she didn't. I look back over my shoulder and give the cheerleader the stink eye. We sit down at a booth and I can tell by the way Macy's avoiding eye contact that she already knows what I'm gonna say.
"What the hell was that?" I ask.
"I'm just tired," she replies. Her answer doesn't sit well with me, but I'll try not to read into it. A waitress appears and hands us menus as she takes our drink order. By the time she comes back, any and I are in a heated debate deciding if Aquaman is cool or not.
"Dude, you're so wrong, he's so lame," I spit.
"He can breathe underwater, that's awesome," Macy retorts.
"You know who else can breathe underwater, SpongeBob," I say with a smirk.
"E-excuse me," the waitress says.
"What?" Macy and I yell at her in unison. Her eyes go wide and her face pales. Nice job Skye, you scared an old lady. Her blue uniform looks like it's from the 50's and pencil behind her ear needs to be sharpened.
"Your orders?" She asks with a quiet and shaky voice.
"Sorry, two chocolate mousse slices," I say with as much sincerity I can muster up. As the waitress, who's name tag reads Nora, leaves Macy and I continue our argument about Aquaman until our pie comes. And ten minutes later we have full stomachs and empty wallets."What shift do you have tonight?" Macy asks as I drive back to her house. I tell her I work 6 till close and begin to rant on about how lazy one of my co workers is. I work at a stationary store near the center of town, which always smells like coffee and old parchment. After I drop Macy off, I see that I have no time to go home and only have an hour to get my homework done. Great. Looks like I'll just pull another late night.
When I get to work, I put on my name tag and take a seat behind the register. Someone called in sick and found no replacement so I have to cover my shift alone. Two hours have passed by and no one has come in. The clock reads 8:27 and I decide to have a little fun. I walk to the back room, grab my iPod, and plug I into the audio jack for our speaker system. I begin to dance around the store and along to the song. A few songs later, my jams are cut short when someone clears their throat from behind me, which causes me to jump and knock over a pen display. I turn off the music and head back to the customer.
"Sorry, I didn't think anyone would come in." I look up at the person and I am met by green eyes and shaggy hair. I bend down to pick up the pens.
"It's okay, I guess only weirdoes come in to buy thank you cards at nine o'clock," he says as with a laugh. His laugh makes me smile and I point him in the direction of the Thank You cards. I ring up his purchase and smile as I give him his receipt.
"Sorry for making you Macarena into a pen display," he says making fun of me.
"It's okay, they really were in desperate need of a good party anyways." We laugh a little but once it becomes silent, he introduces himself. "I'm Levi."
I quirk an eyebrow at his name, he does not look live a Levi, "I'm Skye." He looks at me, nods and walks out the door.A/N hi guys, sorry this took a little longer than I would have hoped. I am really starting to like the direction that this story is going in. I have a lot planned and I hope you like it.
Picture on the side is Macy, portrayed by the lovely Aubrey Plaza.
