Ever since the S Brigade arrived at their special training grounds... the trainees noticed that there was something off about one of their trainers.

There was definitely something wrong with Qin Jiu and You Huo, both of whom were absolute monsters, demons even, but that was a rather well known fact since even before they joined this special training unit. And if they were going to gossip about anyone... they'd rather do it to anyone else but the two demon kings.

Nope, they'd much rather talk about Wen Yuan, codename 922. He was in the Design team, as well as the Operation and Maintenance team, working on stuff that none of the trainees could understand. The only reason they were somewhat familiar with was because Qin Jiu would sometimes call him to supervise their training while he went off to bother You Huo.

But Wen Yuan wasn't a good supervisor, not by a long shot. The man was often distracted, staring at the woods, the sky, and road, anywhere but where the trainees were forced to sprint laps, do push ups, or run whatever hellish course the two demon kings had decided on for the day.

Not that it helped much. Wen Yuan usually snapped to attention after a few minutes, somehow keeping track of all their progress despite looking in the complete opposite direction, barking out some orders before letting his thoughts and gaze wander off again.

The trainees preferred him to You Huo and Qin Jiu; at the very least, Wen Yuan didn't give off the feeling that he would decapitate someone if they were a few seconds short of hitting the target.

The only issue was... every time Wen Yuan stopped paying attention to the trainees, he just looked sad, lost. At times, he even brought steak to barbecue for the trainees, but whenever he set up the grill and tossed the meat up to be cooked, the man would just stare at the steak, sighing wistfully as he flipped them around perfectly.

It almost looked like he had lost a close family member or a precious significant other... though based on what they knew, neither seemed too likely. They had to admit, Wen Yuan looked good, and if they weren't so terrified of his close connection to Qin Jiu, some might even have tried confessing to him.

No, it was the fact that Wen Yuan constantly looked like he was mourning someone. Otherwisee, there was no doubt that he would be able to snag himself a girlfriend.

Then one day, as Qin Jiu beckoned Wen Yuan over once again to take over supervision, instead of complying, the other man shook his head, fussing over his various devices.

"Not today. Please, Boss." Wen Yuan looked directly into Qin Jiu's pitch black eyes, "He messaged me."

Qin Jiu froze, as well as all the trainees, half expecting him to smite poor Wen Yuan for disobeying him.

On the contrary, Qin Jiu softened, looked worried even, and asked, "Are you sure?"

"Yeah. He's here. He has to be." Wen Yuan nodded firmly, "We're not going to be here any longer... when they install the new system..."

Qin Jiu seemed to understand the severity of the situation, and waved Wen Yuan off, "Go on. But don't get your hopes up, okay? Even if he's still here, he might not be able to manifest properly like he used to before."

With that, Wen Yuan had run off, and Qin Jiu turned his attention back to the trainees, who were all watching on in confusion.

"Did I say that you guys could stop?"

---------------------

As trainees came and went, rumours were also passed down, from warnings to not make You Huo mad, to Qin Jiu's antics, Gao Qi's utter hatred of Qin Jiu, the ridiculous amount of alcohol Chu Yue could drink... as well as poor Wen Yuan, who always tried his best to appear as if he were perfectly alright, only to fall apart and mourn all by himself when he thought he was hidden from everyone else.
