Nightmares- Hijiri x Reader

I'm really excited to finally post something, even more that it's about a show I love so much!

You open your eyes looking around, you notice it's still dark. As you rub the sleep from your eyes you remember you slept over at Hijiri's house or rather mansion. You've been dating for a couple months so you didn't mind sharing a bed, not like you were even that close to each other, the bed was probably big enough to fit over 5 people. You heard rustling and remembered why you woke up.

Hijiri was tossing and turning next to you. You thought that maybe this is just how he sleeps but on closer inspection you noticed his breathing was panicked and had a pained expression on his face. He was also mumbling something but it wasn't loud enough to decipher. It didn't take a genius to realize he was having a nightmare. You decide to wake him before whatever's going on in his head becomes worse.

"Hijiri?" You called out softly so as to not startle him.

Instead of waking him it seemed to only make it worse as his breathing became more erratic.

"Hijiri wake up," You say in a panicked voice, placing your hand on his arm.

It was enough to wake him from his nightmare, he jolted up, frantically looking around the room. He tried to calm his breathing but it only worked a little. He hugged his legs and rested against the headboard trying to calm down again. You were always used to him being so calm and collected, it pained you seeing him like this.

He noticed your stare and it didn't take long for his expression to change to an emotionless one.

"Are you okay?" you ask softly.

"I'm fine," he replied bitterly.

You could hear the sadness in his voice and you pulled him into a hug to try to comfort him. For a couple seconds he doesn't move, still hugging his legs tightly against his chest. Once he processed you hugging him he wrapped his arms around you and nuzzled his head into your neck. You were quick to tighten your grip on him.

The two of you stayed like that for a while, silently comforting him. Eventually Hijiri calmed down a bit.

"Are you ok?" you repeat your question from before, still not letting go of him.

After a minute of silence he finally responded.

"No," he mumbled, almost too quiet to hear.

You shifted to a more comfortable position, laying on your side, you and Hijiri still holding each other as you pulled the blanket on top of you.

"Do you want to talk about it?"

"I'm not used to caring for people, i-it's still new to me," he stated, "The only people close to me are you and Anzu, a-and Anzu has gotten hurt before, even though we weren't far from each other she still got hurt, I couldn't protect her, what if, what if you get hurt too, what if I can't protect you."

You sigh, petting his hair, you reply softly,

"The worlds a dangerous place, I understand, but it always has been and will be. I can't promise I won't ever get hurt, I probably will but it's a part of life. I'll heal. And Anzu wasn't hurt because you didn't protect her, she was hurt because of a lunatic, and you put her in prison afterwards. You're a good person Hijiri, I chose to be with you and I'll stay by your side."

"You won't lose me. I promise."

Those last words seemed to give him some comfort as he relaxed a little, he mumbled a quiet thank you, still not letting go. You pet his hair and give him a kiss before drifting back to sleep.
