Stefanie Salvatore was born on November 1st, 1846, on the Veritas Estate in what would eventually become the town known as Mystic Falls, Virginia. She is the youngest child and the only woman born to Giuseppe Salvatore and Lillian Salvatore. She is the younger sister of Damon Salvatore. When Stefanie was born the goddess Aphrodite decided to leave part of her soul in her causing her to grow up with a beauty compared to a goddess or angel.
Years later, in 1863 Stefanie met Valerie Tulle, falling madly in love with her without caring that they are both of the same gender, Valerie came with Julian, a vampire boyfriend of Stefanie's mother although she did not know. Julian was abusive and tried to separate Valerie and Stefan, as he found it disgusting that both girls were together but Valerie used her magical amulet to cast a cloaking spell so they wouldn't be seen when they went on a date. Stefanie and Valerie make love that night being the first time of Stefanie with someone and the first time of Valerie with a girl. Julian eventually caught them afterward and forced Valerie to leave with him, but before she left, she assured Stefanie that she would find her way back to her. At the end of the summer that year, Valerie sent Stefanie a telegram asking her to run away with her. Stefanie then arrived at their meeting place two hours early with a bouquet of flowers and waited for her there, only to be devastated when she didn't show up. Stefanie didn't know that Julian caught her trying to leave her and then beat her.
Year later in 1864, Stefanie tells her older brother that when she fell in love she didn't care about the gender proving it after when she fell in love with Katherine Pierce. But she was not the only one to fall in love with Katherine, her brother Damon also fell in love with her and left the army for her. However, despite Damon's feelings for Katherine, Katherine's preference was Stefanie, she even asked to escort her to the Founders Ball regardless of the fact that they were two women together.
One night, Stefanie and Katherine had spent a passionate night together when she suddenly bit Stefanie. The next morning after their passionate affair, Stefanie awoke with a bloody wound on her neck, and the previous night she slowly returned to her. She was frightened of Katherine, she told her to get away from her. To calm her down, Katherine compelled her to not be afraid of her. Some time later, after Stefanie's father found out about the vampires and Katherine was secretly dating her daughter, he decided to put together a plan to kill all the vampires, causing Stefanie and Damon to become vampires that day.
