The Damned Souls - Prologue

“Jade, baby, go to sleep” The woman said, trying to comfort the 9 year old girl lying on the bed.

“But I’m scared mum” Jade replied, her voice shaking.  Her mother sat on the bed next to her, placing a hand on her shoulder; she then leaned closer, planting a soft warm kiss on her daughter’s forehead. Usually, that kind of manifestation of love and affection, used to soothe Jade, made her feel safe and sound; but now, the apprehension growing inside of her, blocked those feelings away, made them seem just a fading memory.

Jade looked up, and met her mother’s eyes, which were the same color as hers, a bright aquamarine; but whereas hers were filled with concern, Jade's were filled with tears.  The woman hugged the little girl, embraced her until the soft sobs hushed.

“There is nothing to be afraid, my love” She said, giving Jade a kiss on her head; she then stood up and made her way to the door. She stopped on the doorway, and gave Jade a reassuring smile. “Sleep tight, Jade” She said before closing the door.

Jade swallowed a gulp of inexistent saliva, her mouth dried up by fear; and then closed her eyes tightly, trying to hide her inexplicable terror.  “There is nothing to be afraid” the words her mom had told her resounded in her head. Jade longed to believe in them, she craved for them to be true; but she knew they weren’t- there was something to be afraid of. Jade hugged Mr. Bear tightly, the stuffed pink dog which had accompanied her since her memory recalls, and the only thing that could give her the slightest comfort.

She then tried to fall asleep, tried to empty her mind of the fearful thoughts that were haunting her, but that seemed something impossible to do, as the nightmarish ideas appeared to be carved in stone. Jade rolled and turned on the bed, the sheets now intertwined in between her thin legs; the little girl had never found it difficult to sleep, but now, that distressing hunch flourishing inside of her, made sleep seem an unattainable fantasy.

Accepting defeat, Jade opened her eyes and sat up against the pink headboard.  Her room normally was the place were Jade felt cozier, more secure; the painting of fairies on the bright violet walls, and the piles of stuffed toys on the far right-corner of the room were things that put a warm smile on the 9 year old face. But not that night.

The subdued moonlight leaking through the gaps in between the curtains was the only source of light, and the so well-known things in her room were distorted by it. The piles of toys were now an aggrupation of eerie silhouettes that made Jade’s blood run cold; and the once so bright and cheerful fairies painted on her wall, seemed to be dark sinister shadows staring at her viciously, giving  Jade the creeps.

She held onto Mr. Bear tighter, wanting her fear to go away, expecting her pink stuffed toy to give her some kind of relaxation; but it didn’t.  Dry sobs were forming on her throat, and her hands were slightly trembling; terror taking over her body. The thing that frightened Jade the most was that she didn’t know what she was sacred of; she didn’t understand why this panic was taking over her. She just knew.

Not taking it any longer, Jade went off the bed and smoothly made her way to the room next to hers, Mr. Bear still clinging in her arms. She carefully opened the door and placed herself on the side of the bed.
