Author's pov

The soft sound of rain tapping against glass filled your ears as you leaned back into your seat at the airport. You were slightly groggy due to waking up at such an early hour, it was barely past five am but you didn't mind, you usually woke up at five thirty in the morning so the slight change wasn't too bad.

Today was the day, you were finally being sent off to Tokyo, your brain pondered why your mother was sending you again. Sure Chicago wasn't the safest place nor did it have the best education but it was where you were born and raised. Although you quickly dismissed this, mother's word was final and so you took a deep breath, letting the air in your lungs sit as you closed your eyes, clearing your mind of irrational thoughts and assumptions. You exhaled and then began your walk to the plane. The dark and stormy morning was oddly relaxing, you had always liked rain and storms in general but that wasn't important right now. You tighten your tie slightly and grab your umbrella, unfolding it as you step out with many other passengers into the rain as you set out to the plane.

The walk, although filled with absent minded chatter, was peaceful and you quickly boarded the plane, with only one small suitcase, an umbrella, and a rather large book squeezed between your arm and the side of your torso. You made your way to your seat. Sitting down you set your umbrella aside with your luggage whilst keeping the book in one hand. The book's cover simply read "The Basics of Japanese".

You quickly tuned out the world around you as you opened the book. You began to read quietly and the pages seemed to fly as you delved into the language. The language itself was very interesting, different from the others you had learned but still held some familiarity. You stopped as you came across a basic outline of the alphabet and quickly drew down the symbols memorizing each as you went on through the book. You pulled up the paper analyzing the letters and writing down a few sentences and going through them in your head.

"Um- excuse me sir but would you like any refreshments?"

You were pulled from your reading by a hand waving in your face. You turned to the stewardess who was pulling a cart of snacks behind her.

"Oh yes, a water is all, please and thank you."

'Looks like I got lost in thought again, I didn't even notice we took off.' You turned back towards your book already about halfway through with a litter of papers with different sentences. You checked your watch, looking at the small white numbers on the jet black surface of the watch face. The small gray hands pointing to six thirty. You let out a quiet sigh.

'Only an hour in and I'm nearly done with the first book, I suppose I could take a small break.'

You sat back in your seat pulling up a small book with the familiar picture of a jet place queen. It was just a simple chess book going into detail of the queen's gambit opening, you had read it hundreds of times by now, first discovering it as a small child around the age of three. And now here you are a young man at the age of 15 all alone on a plane headed for Japan. You thought to yourself as you opened up the now old and slightly tattered book. Its pages burned deep in your memory. You smiled as you flipped through the pages already knowing what each would say before ever turning the page, nevertheless you found it a good way to appease your mind.

You were pulled back to reality by the say stewardess placing a cold bottle of water in front of you. You gave a slight nod of appreciation and set down the old chess book.

'I'll continue that later. Best to learn the language I'll need first, I should also finish up that math book the school assigned. I wonder if they'll give me a more challenging book when I get there?, suppose I shouldn't think about that now.'
