The Darkness Below

The Prequel

Melinda and John had planned for the pregnancy for years. The Overrulers finally approved after years of waiting. You see, with people as important as Melinda and John, if they were to have a child, it would have to be planned thoroughly, as their child would be more important than anyone would know. There was a prophecy years ago, about the children of the greatest magic wielders, as one child would rule darkness and one the light. What exactly is the darkness and the light? Some thought it was a metaphor, but prophecies are never clear. Melinda and John were to only have one child, as they were thought of the greatest magic wielders. The Overrulers needed to make sure they would stay loyal to the Overway and the leader of darkness wouldn't rise for a long, long time.

All the pretests were good, everything looked normal with the unborn infant. Melinda and John were so excited it was a boy, they would have a son to expand on their legacy. It was all supposed to end well, with a happy couple and a new son. With the Overrulers on the their tail, Melinda and John couldn't afford anything to go wrong. If something did go wrong, it would be one of the biggest searches in decades, as it would be the greatest scandal in their time. But you see, no one ever knew the truth. Not Melinda and John's son, the Overrulers, not even them themselves. What little Melinda and John knew, they got rid of, they disappeared and made themselves lifeless, normal. The only answers, gone forever, or so they thought. They were still answers, and they belonged to the one who created Zyler.

The happy day came, when Melinda was to give birth. It was low-key, the Overrulers made it that way. They went to a human hospital, the doctors there were completely ignorant. After hours, the doctors showed them. Twins. Of course they were surprised, this wasn't supposed to happen, there was one boy, and he was going to be Jake, they hadn't planned for a second child.

They could tell something was wrong. While one child, happy, smiling was their own, the other twin wasn't. He had the aura of darkness, he was destined to be their ruler. Right then, they could've given him up to the Council, the Overrulers, and he would have been taken care of. But Melinda and John had souls, they weren't like the rest of the people in their society. They thought that they could change the newly born baby, make him good, as it wasn't his fault he was evil. Then, they secretly decided to hide him, in a place far away, far from any magic or humans, where he would live in a trance until Melinda and John could fix him.

If something would ever become further wrong, Melinda and John agreed to erase their memories, so the corrupt Overrulers would never find out the truth. It was both a good and bad decision, as many would wonder years later, the only answers were locked up in memories, with no way to unlock them.

They moved away from their society, citing that they wanted their only son to grow up normal, when they really wanted the eye off of them, so they could keep watch on the other twin, bound to be tranced for eternity, as long as they could see. They felt affection for the child, they truly thought he was their son, in a way. They even named him, but he himself would change it.

No one ever knew, even the normal son, Jake. He was just a boy, who knew nothing of his legacy and his future. He was brought up as a normal child, he had normal friends, they all thought. Melinda and John took pride in how they brought up their child, but even the greatest couldn't have predicted how it would all fall apart. Because of Melinda and John's choices, many suffered, but through all of the damage, some benefitted.

Choices, a little over 17 years ago, would affect everything in the future. It would affect even the normal, as the truth slowly leaked out.

This is the prequel to Reed's story, the average person who became friends with Jake, who changed everything. Reed could've lived a different life, but maybe everything was meant to be in the end.
