THE MOMENT THE BELL rings for the end of class, Shannon's first move is to find Scott and Stiles. After all, the three of them had decided that it would be Stiles' job to research the Kanima during class, and she knew that he wouldn't wait for her to catch up before he began his info-dumping. Luckily enough, her English classroom isn't all that far away from the boys' World History class ( where they had been forced to sit on opposite sides of the room due to their incessant talking ), and her seat is the closest to the door leading to the corridor, so she's the first out once class is dismissed.

The hallway quickly fills with students as they filter through the doors lining the walls. Scott and Stiles appear moments after Shannon reaches the centre of the walkway, and she quickly gravitates towards them.

"All right. I only found one thing online called a Kanima — it's a Werejaguar from South America that goes after murderers."

With a furrowed brow, Scott glances around. "That thing was not a jaguar..."

Stiles draws his lips together and gestures wildly to himself and the blonde girl to his left. "Yeah, and we're not exactly murderers."

Shannon nods along. "I'm about ninety-eight per cent sure I've never killed anyone," she says.

While Stiles, baffled, stares open-mouthed at Shannon, Scott swiftly moves on from her joke. "Yeah, but you guys did see it kill somebody, which is probably why it tried to kill you," he says, wildly jerking his backpack straps around. Stiles stops in his tracks but his two friends keep walking, Shannon taking his place by Scott's side. "And it's still trying to kill you, and it probably won't stop until you're both dead."

The younger boy gapes as his friends disappear into their next classroom. "You know, sometimes I really begin to question this 'friendship.'" When neither of them double back for him, Stiles starts back up again and bursts through the doors of the Economics room to secure his spot — the one to the right of Scott and in front of Shannon — which has worked well enough in the past until Stiles inevitably turns around to speak to Shannon, almost always resulting in a scolding from their teacher.

By the time the bell has rung again to signify the end of the five-minute passing period, the desk to the left of Shannon's is still empty, and for a fleeting moment, she celebrates her unrestricted view out of the window. She's always enjoyed staring out into space, especially now, during her dad's classes.
