It's so cold.
Arms wrapped tightly around his body, he sat under the cardboard structure.
Where is she?
He peered over from the corner of it seeing people walking on the sidewalk just in front of the alleyway. The person he was looking for was no where in sight.
He recoiled into the darkness of the cardboard using an old news paper as a blanket. He scoffed.
Figures, she probably got her self in trouble again. I swear these new kids on the street don't know how to survive out here like I do.
"Gregory." A voice called out in the alleyway causing the boy to stiffen. He cautiously peeked his head out seeing an officer that frequented the area. His hand on his belt waiting for a response. Gregory didn't want to say anything.
There was a small sigh.
"Could you are least act like you heard me?"Gregory slowly crawled out of his fort, standing up dusting his pants off before seeing the man before him. The officer flashed a happy smile. Now he saw the bag of food in one hand.
"And here I thought maybe you were starting to hate me." He laughed.
"I brought you some food. It's not much but it's the best I can do. Are you sure you don't want to go to an orphanage? It would be a whole lot warmer than this."Gregory walked up to the officer snatching the bag huffing.
"I can take care of myself." Hastily he opened the bag looking inside.
"You got me cookies?""I think a kid deserves a few sweet treats occasionally." The office hummed gently patting Gregory on the head. He lifted his gaze to stare into the eyes of someone he lightly called a friend.
"Thanks Carlton." Gregory closed the bag clutching it close to his chest.
"That's officer to you kid." Carlton's tone turned serious and then at the sight of Gregory's side glare he laughed. Clearly trying to be funny.
"You wanna ride around in the police car again? I mean at least for a little bit?"Gregory gazed down at his bag then back at Carlton before nodding. He followed after the adult to the police car sliding into the passenger side comfortably.
Warm.
Gregory hummed content.
"You've got another scratch on your chin." Carlton glanced at Gregory's face reaching over to the glove compartment.
"You're lucky I carry around bandaids."Gregory complained as Carlton tried to put the bandaid on, insisting he could put it on himself. The officer in question raised his hands in mock surrender allowing Gregory to do as he must.
"You know," Carlton spoke again after silence fell over them-aside from Gregory's chewing on some of the food in the bag-, " I was wondering. Anything weird been happening on your side of the neighborhood?"
Gregory looked up at Carlton confused.
"Like what?" He spoke through a mouthful of chips he kept shoving into his mouth.
"Like, suspicious people. Maybe in costumes." The car circled around the block driving within the speed limit.
"Yeah." Gregory swallowed thickly wiping his mouth with the back of his hand. Which left a trail of crumbs on it.
"There's this lady running around. She wears a funny costume and she was talking to a friend of mine the other day.""What kind of costume?" Carlton gripped the steering wheel tightly in his hands.
"It was a rabbit. I think." Gregory shrugged.
"I don't know it was weird! She ran away when i rounded the corner. I guess my shadow looked like an adult's cause she sounded like she wanted my friend to follow her at first."
