When I came too something felt off. I remember a support beam falling on me but I had no injury to speak of. I started to inspect my surroundings and I could see nothing but an almost blinding whiteness when I saw a human-like silhouette coming into view. As the creature got closer I stood uneasy realizing its pale grey skin. It had Two giant razor sharp teeth jutting out of its bottom jaw. It came up to me and said “Hello Adrian my name is Maalk, I am the director of the UAF.” So many thoughts raced around my head but one was more urgent than the rest. Struggling to speak, I asked, “How the hell do you know my name?” He made a disgusting and unsettling sound I could only assume was a laugh. He looked at me and said, “Well first I need to explain that the UAF stands for the Universal Agency of Fate. As for your name, at the UAF we keep a record of all beings across all dimensions.” Then I said “While that explains who you are and how you know my name it doesnt explain where I am or what the fuck you are.” He looked at me almost sincerely and said, “I am an Orc and you are in the way station between life and death.” He kept talking but all I could hear was death over and over again in my head. Suddenly I was brought back to reality when he snapped his fingers in front of my face and said, “Did you catch anything I just said'', and I responded, “No, I'm sorry.” He chuckled and repeated what he said before, “I am here to give you a choice to finally rest or to keep fighting like you’ve done all your life, I want to make you an agent of the UAF.” I tried to calm myself and rationalize everything I'm hearing and seeing and simply asked “What does being an agent of the UAF entail?” He quickly responded, “As an agent of the UAF you will oversee the fate of certain people and events because in order to keep the balance sometimes certain timelines need a nudge.” I ran my choices through my head and I realized there was only one choice I could make. “I’ll become an agent of the UAF.”
The orc motioned for me to follow him and we walked in silence for what seemed like hours until we finally came to a large gateway. I asked “Why make this such a long walk?”
He said “So nobody can just wander into a place most are never supposed to know about.” His answer made me chuckle and shake my head. He said “Finally I thought you’d never get that look of disdain off your face.” I jokingly responded “Honestly I thought I would never get rid of that look either, but you gotta make the best of whatever death throws at you.” He chuckled and he opened the gate and we walked into a massive city and he said “You will be given an apartment and an office”, he reached a ring out to me and continued, “This will give you directions to your house and your office.” I looked at him puzzled and took the ring and as I put it on my left index finger I felt a searing pain that took me to my knees and realized the ring molded to my finger. He helped me up and said “That ring will be your passkey through any gates to jump dimensions, you can also think of a destination and it will put the directions straight into your memory.” I looked at him and said “You could have given me a warning about the pain” and he responded “I didn't know it would be painful, you are the only human to ever become part of the UAF.” I was confused as to why out of all humans I was chosen but I chose not to pry further about it. Maalk walked away and yelled over his shoulder “Come to the office in the morning.” I thought about going home and before I realized I was walking there. Luckily my house wasn’t too far away because I was starting to loathe walking. I came up to an apartment building and put my hand to the door and the doors opened on their own as my ring glowed. I walked up the stairs and just as I figured my door worked the same as the building doors. The apartment wasn’t anything special but it's better than the one I had. I thought at least my bathroom wasn't in my bedroom. I went straight to my bed and collapsed into it.
I woke up feeling refreshed thinking it was all a dream but when I opened my eyes and woke up in my new apartment I realized it was all real. I went to my closet and found a navy blue suit and a white dress shirt. I walked to my bathroom and took a shower. I must have been in there for at least an hour. I stepped out, dried off, and went and put on the suit. It was a perfect fit. I walked out of the building and headed to the UAF building and when I got there the building was filled with many different creatures all giving me the same look of confusion. I just ignored it and walked into my office and sat at my desk. Then someone who actually looked human walked into my office. The only difference was she was blue and had a long tail. She looked at me with a soft smile and said “Hi, I’m Dawn. I’m your partner which is suitable I guess because I'm the only one of my kind to be in the UAF like you.” I smiled back at her and said “I’m Adrian and honestly I’m just glad there is someone who's even remotely close to a human and even more glad that we were assigned to be partners.” She sat down in the chair next to me at our desk and said, “Well, before we get started we need to get you trained and she grabbed my hand and led me to the training room and put my hand into a hole in the wall. I could feel a ton of information rushing into my brain. When she took my hand out of the hole I looked at her confused and asked, “What the hell just happened?” She giggled and said, “It’s called an information outlet and it uploads your training into your reflexes and instinct.” I looked puzzled until she threw a punch at me and I immediately grabbed her wrist and threw her over me as she spun around, landed on her feet and swept my legs. Then she got on me, pinned me down and held a knife to my throat. And I said “How do I get the training you got?” She quickly got off of me and replied, “You see there are many different ranks in the UAF. Everytime you get a promotion you get training that is a step higher from your last.” I guess that made sense but it was still curious that they wouldn’t give you the maximum amount of training off the bat. The moment my mind had time to process the training and the confusion Dawn told me we were going on our first mission.
