Niekiah closed her eyes to the searing heat, trying to shield her red skin from the sun. Her mouth was dry, her clothes were torn. Titus stood beside her, blood on his lips and a smile on his face. Before the two of them lay the dead body of the boy from District nine- the eighteen year old who had just tried to kill her. His body was torn open, his ribs exposed to the air. She knew that the helicopter wouldn't come pick him up until they had left, so she tugged at Titus' sleeve.
"Come on, Titus, we have to go" her voice was soft, and afraid. If she weren't with her ally, she would have died long ago. She knew this- she needed him. But he stayed where he was, staring down at the body. The boy he had just killed, and eaten from hunger.
His laugh began hoarse, but became louder. Niekiah took a single step backwards, eyes fearful as tears threatened to spill over. The heat was getting to them both, and they were hungry, so she had said nothing when he began to... Eat his victims. She had hoped it was simply a once off thing, that he wouldn't continue. But it had kept on, and ten more families now had only mangled remains to remember their beloved children by. But still, she had kept silent. She had to- she loved him.
He turned, and looked at her with a strange hunger in his eyes. She flinched away, eyes wide.
"Titus?" He grinned at her, showing blood on his teeth.
"I'm not leaving here, Niekiah. The Capitol can't stop me. I'm... Rebelling!" he let out another laugh, then began to cough, hardly able to breathe through his burnt lips. Niekiah took a step towards him, holding her hand out carefully to go and touch his shoulder, treating him like a wounded animal.
"Titus, come on. You're acting crazy" she said, trying to pull him away. He spun, growling at her.
"DON'T TOUCH ME!" He yelled suddenly. Niekiah flinched away, stuttering apologies. Her lover was staring at her with bloodshot eyes as she backed away, knowing she would have to leave soon. The last few times, The Capitol had knocked the two of them out by now. This time, they had been too long. Something was wrong, something was going to happen.
She heard the helicopter blades whirring and she ran as far as she could, stumbling and falling some distance away. Titus laughed, stumbling to the ground as he began to bleed from his chest. The Capitol would use some sort of special effect to change his death, but she knew what had happened. He had been shot, because he had gone to far.
Niekiah's mind was numb, her eyes blank as she watched the body be lifted away. She found the strength to move again and stumbled toward Titus, who still seemed to be breathing. She collapsed beside him, a single tear slipping out of her left eye.
"You knew, you knew!" She cried, resisting the urge to punch him "Why, Titus?!" He just smiled at her, a last spark of sanity lingering in his dulling eyes.
"You're the victor, Nikki." He coughed out, calling her by the nickname he hadn't used since they were children " I had nothing to live for- my parents are dead. But you have a life ahead of you." He coughed again, splattering Niekiah's shirt with his blood "Don't give up on life. I love you." He smiled once more at her sobbing face and leant back, closing his eyes.
The cannon fired, signalling is death.
The Hunger Games had been won, but the victor felt no glory at all.
