Eventually, it was time for me to start getting ready for bed. I got up, folded the blanket and put it away.
I went upstairs to my room and took a quick shower, when I got out I looked outside and the rain was still pouring. It was a little bit lighter than before but surprisingly it had not stopped. I wrapped my hair up and opened my bag so I could put my belongings away. After I put everything away I noticed something at the bottom of the bag, the last thing left. It was an envelope. I picked it up and it had writing on it that said:
"Open two weeks after October 9th 1995"
I was so curious and wanted to open it right away but I told myself to be patient. It had my name on the back and I recognized the writing, it was my grandmas' but why did I have to wait two weeks and three days to open the letter?
I was startled by the phone ringing on my nightstand. I went over and picked it up, bringing it to my ear.
"Hello." I said. "Hey Lani." It was Keiva.
"Oh hey, how was your drive back?" I asked.
"It was okay except for Tane and Tammys bickering the whole ride back." she said while laughing. "Hey what do you think about all this rain?" she asked.
"Yeah, isn't it strange? It's been raining hard for almost three hours straight." I said. Keiva was quiet, I got a weird feeling in my gut and didn't know what was up.
"You okay?" I asked.
Still nothing.
"Hello?"
"What? Sorry yeah I'm just thinking." She replied.
"What's on your mind?"
"It's just weird, we've never had this much rain, do you think it's a bad thing or maybe a sign?"
"What do you mean? Why would rain be a sign" I asked, sitting down on my bed.
"Meet me at the cave in five minutes, ok?" she said.
"Uhm sure, is everything okay?"
"I'll explain there." She said before the line went dead.
I grabbed my raincoat, an umbrella and a flashlight because it was almost ten. I snuck out the front door but told my brother that I would be back shortly and headed out to the cave. The cave was the meeting place where my cousins, my brother and I would meet to talk and it was our hangout space sometimes. We even put some old lawn chairs and a small table in it so we could sit. It was about equal distance from both of our homes which was about a five minute walk.
It was hard to muck around in water and mud and with the hard rain and lack of light, the walk took a bit longer but luckily I knew the way. When I got there Keiva was already waiting for me, she looked very frightened and was pacing back and forth. I closed my umbrella and took off my hood waiting for her to speak. I was curious to know what she was talking about over the phone.
"Ok this is going to sound crazy but Tane and Tammy wouldn't believe me when I told them my theory, but I am hoping you might." She was starting to freak me out a little bit, I stuttered from the cold and my confusion, "sure, what is this theory of yours?"
"Three nights ago, I had a nightmare; we were all there. Tane, Tammy, Francis, Manu, you and I. I couldn't see much and I had woken up before I could figure out where we were. We were in a war, I think. And there was screaming, blood and tears and most importantly rainfall." I stared at her blankly, not quite sure what she was implying.
"Can I just ask how rainfall is more important than blood or tears or screaming?"
Keiva dropped her head into her hands and sighed, "no, that's not what I meant. It's just relevant to right now"
