The noise of a watch ticking burned into my mind. I let go of my pen, letting it drop onto the desk. Several heads snapped up in alarm… normally, such a noise wouldn’t be heard. Normally, my English class wouldn’t be worse than hell. But … today hasn’t been the most normal of days. I examined the imprint the pen had caused on my fingers and let out a sigh. My pop quiz has just been completed. English has always been one of my best subjects, writing is relaxing. But, this can never mean I like writing long ass tests. Our English teacher, Mr. Francis, was out today. No one was certain why, but I was certain that no student in this class will be able to forgive him for leaving us with ‘Mrs. Robin’. She was a well-known sub at Harvey High, for all the wrong reasons.

I glanced over to the window and let my mind run wild. There was a little over fifteen minutes left. It was only the beginning of my sophomore year, it was almost October. Yet the weather seamed quite warm, out. The forecast had said it would be that way all October, until the very end-

My train of thought was cut off by my favorite voice in the world, “Daydreaming, Mary? Or do you like sitting in hell, when there’s a perfect pizza waiting with your name on it?” Owen Francis. Yes, Mr. Francis’ son; More importantly, my best friend. He’s always been there for me, and truth be told, I can’t live without him. He’s the kindest, funniest, wildest, wisest guy you’ll ever meet.

I shot out of my desk in relief and tossed my book bag over my shoulder.

“I was just thinking about how nice the weather is… don’t you think? I hope it stays like this for Halloween,” I ended with a small murmur thinking about Halloween. It’s my favorite holiday, the most … mysterious. Just thinking about the night created a thrill through me.

“The weather?” he paused and then burst out laughing after he saw my serious expression, I couldn’t make out what he said after that, so I just walked away. I placed my test on the teacher’s desk, she hadn’t even looked up from the book she was reading. My head shook involuntarily in disgust. I can stand anything, liars, cheaters, fakes, sluts, but I can’t stand shallow people. The people who think they’re on top of the world can go die, and I would laugh. Seriously, I’m not a mean person, but for God’s sake!

I heard Owen trying to catch up with me, and I slowed down my pace.

“Mary, I didn’t mean anything. I just sometimes forget how sensible and sensitive you are… Sorry.” He sounded sicere, and I did appreciate it.

“Who said I was upset? Seriously dude, I’m 100% fine. Don’t apologize for being a normal teen.” I rolled my eyes at him, and shoved past a few people to get to my locker. It wasn’t a small school, but everyone was trying to get to the cafeteria for some pizza. After a moments hesitation, I decided to just get an apple from the snack bar outside. After placing my books in my locker, I turned around to face Owen, who was staring off somewhere in the distance. I frowned a bit and looked in his direction.

There was Fiona. Fiona Abdul. I didn’t know her very well, but I truly knew enough. Her mom worked with my dad, last year. She’s a cool girl. But, she’s bad news, and even a baby could see that. I know that, gossip shouldn’t be believed, but words tell me she’s a backstabber. So of course, the fact that Owen might be crushing on her, bugged me. I knew Owen; he doesn’t fall easily, and once he falls he will never let anything go. She was really beautiful, though. She was a brunette and her hair was very long, it was always pulled up into a stylish pony tail. Fiona always seemed to be smiling; she has light freckles across her nose and the hugest green eyes ever. Above all, I happen to know she could brighten anyone’s day. I don’t mean to judge, but I still think falling for her would be a bad idea … especially for a guy like Owen.

I tried to catch his gaze, but it was locked with Fionas’. Scowling, I turned around and walked quickly, trying to get out of the school. Once I was out, I breathed a sigh of relief. Mobs of people sort of scare me. Big crowds … they’re just not my thing. That’s why right now, I would put in earphones, to maximum volume and just take a walk around campus. Then I would find a bench somewhere, and eat an apple. Just … enjoy nature and what’s around me. And so that’s what I would have done. But my lonely lunch was saved, when I spotted someone that had always been oh so very close to me. We’re tight, and I would not have been able to live without him. Leo. Leo David Highman.
