Prologue

Lyra slowly opened her eyes, squinting as she slowly lifted her head and looked around the room she was in. 

The room was too dark to make out anything, except for a dresser, a bed, and what could be a chair. She tried to see more but the room was much too dark, the only thing catching her eye being the yellow outline of a door. 

Lyra could feel the smooth wood she was sitting on, and the leather straps tying her down. They were tight but not painful: someone obviously put a lot of care into tying her up. 

She wondered how long she would be tied up here, or even worse, what would happen when someone came in. She let her mind wander some, imagining the different scenarios that could follow.

She felt the anxiety in her stomach start to climb. Her thoughts became more sporadic, as she wondered if anyone would ever come in. Her breath quickened and her palms began to sweat a bit. 

But part of her became excited, the sort of excitement you feel just before you go skydiving. The feeling of the unknown called to her, and she listened. 

Just then, she heard a door handle turn, and the door in front of her opened, warm yellow light flooding in. 


And in front of her stood him.
