The Beginning

I slightly opened my eyes and checked the time, 2: 34 p.m. Kuroo will be headed to practice now. I hate to admit it, but I'd honestly like to be with him and my team at volleyball practice. I mean, I enjoy getting the chance to lie in bed and play video games all day, but being sick is really starting to annoy me. Usually when catching a cold I'm fine, seeing as I'm very prone to colds, but this one was by far the worst.

I grabbed my phone, hoping I could somehow cure my boredom for the time being. I scrolled through all my socials, yet nothing piqued my interests. I've seen plenty of cat videos and I'm tired of constantly finding dumb life hack videos. A glue stick and plastic spoons do not make good sunglasses whatsoever. You can't even see out of them. Yet still I sit here scrolling, and scrolling, and scrolling, and scroll-

"People in Europe and India are growing victim to a deadly and highly infectious disease that turns them into cannibalistic creatures..." I found a weird article. What? Cannibalism?  I laughed. Yeah, right, someone is clearly doing a really good job at making their kind of a joke. I scrolled again, but I found a different article saying the same thing. This has to be fake, right? I scrolled and again, more articles and posts of this "disease."

I did further research, and apparently a disease is causing people to go brain dead and have like a one-track mind set on eating other people. The disease is mainly transmitted through a bite or scratch mark from an infected person. So the disease spreads fast. It's basically a zombie apocalypse. I've seen plenty of movies and stuff about this, but it's actually happening in real life now? What if it spreads here? No...I'm sure we'll be safe, right? I mean, if the whole world is finding out about it this early, surely they'll take precautions.

Still, this bothered me. The time, I need the time. I looked at my phone, 5:15 p.m. I was invested in this for almost 3 hours? I really need my mom to hurry up and get home. I really need Kuroo to hurry up and stop by. I need to know they're safe, in the flesh. Why am I so worried? It will be fine..I shouldn't be so bothered by this.

Bzzzz. Bzzzz. Someone was ringing the doorbell, probably Kuroo. I made my way downstairs, though I really didn't want to get up. I opened my door and was greeted by the familiar bedheaded rooster.

"Hey Kenma, feeling any better? You didn't miss much today, but everyone was worried about you." Kuroo smiled and took off his shoes, making himself at home as per usual. "Especially Lev, he wouldn't stop yapping all afternoon about you."

"Sounds like Lev.." I muttered and made my way to the living room. I sat on the couch. Should I tell him? "Hey..have you seen the news lately?"

Kuroo sat down next to me and gave me a very confused look. Guess not...

"What do you mean? Like the weather..?" Kuroo cackled, that annoying rooster-like laugh. This was frustrating me, and I don't know why. We're not even in danger, so why was I so worried. I guess Kuroo took notice of me though, and his look softened. Why does my face have to be so expressive..."Hey, is something wrong?"

"Uh..well, sorta..." I don't even know how to explain it, it's all so crazy. I pulled out my phone and opened up the articles I found. "Apparently there's like some sort of 'zombie apocalypse' or something."

He grabbed my phone and read each article carefully. His face carried genuine concern, guess I'm not alone then. He handed me my phone once he finished, but he didn't say anything. For a while he just zoned out and looked, well, baffled. Finally, he broke the silence.

"Kenma, it already reached Asia.." He looked back at me, his face was serious now. Wait, Asia? I thought it was just in Europe and India? "That post you showed me was from yesterday. When I scrolled down, there was a new post of today. It reached Asia and it's spreading quickly, it's almost to us."

I froze. Was this actually real? Is this actually happening? We'll be safe if we hide. We can find a saferoom and hide. Kuroo and his dad, me, my mom..

"Kuroo," My voice was shaking. My mom should have been home two hours ago. "My mom isn't home. She hasn't contacted me yet."

"Hey don't worry, I'm sure she's almost here. What time does she usually get off work?" Kuroo tried to comfort me.

"Two hours ago..." I was panicking now. I turned on my phone and went straight to a phone call. It rang, and rang, and rang, and voicemail. I tried again. And again. And again. And-

"Kenma, stop. She hasn't answered, come over to my house for the night and we'll see if my dad can help." Kuroo was holding my hand, keeping me from trying more failed attempts any further. Even though I'd rather wait for her here, I decided to go with Kuroo. With all of this going on, I would rather not be alone right now, or away from Kuroo.

I packed a small bag filled with stuff for tonight and I turned off all the lights and everything in the house. Once all that was finished, we finally headed out to his house. For a while I almost fogot I was sick, but unfortunately I was reminded by my countless coughs and sneezes all the way there. It was quiet throughout the neighborhood. Eerily quiet. I looked around and noticed the change in the scenery. It looked damaged, rummaged, and worse, bloody. I froze in my tracks, grabbing a hold of Kuroo's hand.

"Kuroo, look." I whispered. He stopped and his eyes grew wide. How had we not noticed this? I know we had the TV on but still, wouldn't we have noticed this, especially when we stepped out here? I kept on looking around. No signs of anyone, or anything. Besides Kuroo's house, his door was wide open. That wasn't the worst. The steps were covered in blood and an odd sound was coming from the inside of his house. Kuroo tightened his grip on my hand and we slowly walked closer to his house. "Kuroo, stop. Something is in there!"

"My dad is in there." Kuroo looked close to tears. He was frightened. I was frightened. Everything felt so surreal, like it was out of a movie. We inched closer and managed a peek inside. The sight was unbearable.
