The Vinyl Cafe

You hated the night shift.

As a barista of 6 months, you had grown accustomed to the early morning rush, so the eerie quiet of the cafe at 12 am was alien to you.

Only one other person was in the shop with you, and that was your manager Kaitlyn. She sat at one of the tables in the cafe, buried in her text book. For someone attending Backupsmore University, she sure was committed to her studies.

It wasn't exactly a secret students weren't climbing over each other to get into the school. The university was for most students, a fallback option. Hell, if it wasn't for your shoddy interview, you'd be among future musical legends at Berkeley. You could been studying under the best in the world, but now, here you were: the university where the music professors didn't even know the difference between an oboe and an english horn.

Suddenly, you heard a little chirp from the register. A paper printed out and you groaned. A mobile order. These were dreaded, especially it being so late at night. The only other time you work a night shift, you got an order for 36 strawberry smoothies. You pulled the paper off, and stood there staring at it for a while.
S. Pines
Medium Latte
No Milk
10 Shots Esp.
Dark Roast (Oregon Blend)
"Umm Kaitlyn, could you come look at this?"

Kaitlyn put down her textbook and walked over,
"This better be worth it, I have two assignments due at 8 am." She took the paper from you, and studied it.

You looked at her, expectantly,
"Who in their right mind would get 10 shots of straight espresso?"

Kaitlyn stuck the paper to the machine and shrugged,
"Someone with a paper due in the morning I don't know. Could be a prank. Just make it and if they come in we'll know."

You sighed, there's no way you could pull 10 shots and put them in a medium cup. Still, that wouldn't stop you from trying. You were entranced in the rhythm, grind the beans, tamper the grounds, pull the shot, and pour it into the cup. After doing this 10 times, you managed to fit the shots in two medium cups. You leaned against the counter, admiring your handiwork. The door opened, ringing that too familiar bell. In walked in unfamiliar man. He was quite attractive, his brown hair was perfectly kept, even though it was extremely late at night. You smiled, picked up the 2 cups, and walked on over to the edge of the counter.
"S. Pines!"

The man's gaze met yours behind his large glasses. He strode over and picked up one of the cups, his fingers grazing yours,
"Thank you.. umm.."

"Y/N, Y/N L/N, " you smiled gingerly,
"Y/N..." he said thoughtfully, "I don't think I've seen you before."

"Oh, I usually work the morning shift, but we had a call out," you laughed, "Do you usually order this much coffee at this time of night?"

"I usually use my machine at home, but it broke. I plan on getting out of your hair as soon as possible," he scratched the back of his head nervously, "I know working the night shift is never fun."

"Well here," you slid him a glazed donut, "On the house, our Oregon roast is very strong."

"Thank you Y/N, I hope I'll see you again," he let out a soft chuckle, "preferably in the day time."

Just as soon as he'd entered he was gone. You found yourself leaning on the counter, swooning over this man. Something about him made your heart flutter. Kaitlyn looked up from her book,
"You were totally hitting on him weren't you" You felt your face flush,

"Psh no way, besides I barely know the guy."
"Whatever you say Y/N, but he totally had the hots for you. You have to pay for that donut by the way. Rick will kill me." Kaitlyn returned to her book.

You blushed, you weren't exactly the pinnacle of attractiveness, but something your encounter with S. Pines made you feel like you were. You heard the record click, a new song started playing, this one was quite old, but what could you say. You were a sucker for jazz.
We'll meet again,
Don't know where,
Don't know when,
But I know we'll meet again
Some Sunny Day

Hey guys!! I'm back at it again with the fan fictions >:) . I really like this one so far, and I hope you guys will too! I'm very awful w updating, but I have faith this one will maybe be different (probably not). Anywho, instead of having every chapter being named after a song, I'm gonna try to include a song lyric in each one. Try to guess it, or just enjoy it. Anywho, thanks for reading :)
High Six,
Cara
