The static didn't just grow.

It spread.

Like a stain soaking into everything, crawling up the walls, slipping into the cracks of the pavement, buzzing just loud enough to make my teeth ache. The neon from earlier bled back into the street behind me, painting everything in artificial color that didn't belong here.

I didn't turn.

I didn't have to.

"Now this," came that smooth, electric voice, "is a reunion worth sticking around for."

I closed my eyes briefly.

Of course he followed.

Slowly, I glanced over my shoulder.

Vox stood just at the edge of the light, his form flickering slightly, like he hadn't fully decided whether to appear in person or through the screens surrounding us. His grin was already there, wide and knowing, eyes locked not just on me-

-but on him.

Alastor

Alastor didn't turn right away.

But I saw it.

That subtle shift in his posture, the way his shoulders squared just slightly, his smile stretching a fraction too tight.

Annoyed.

Good.

"Vox," Alastor greeted, tone pleasant in the way that meant it absolutely wasn't. "To what do I owe the displeasure."

Vox laughed, stepping fully into view now. "Oh, come on. You look thrilled to see me."

"Thrilled is one word for it."

"And yet," Vox continued smoothly, eyes flicking back to me for just a second, "you're the one lurking around my business. I could say the same."

"I go where I please," Alastor replied.

"Yeah," Vox said, grin sharpening, "you said that already."

The air tightened.

Again.

Always like this with them.

Like watching two blades press against each other, neither willing to give, both just waiting for the other to slip.

I exhaled sharply. "Do you two ever get tired of this?"

Neither of them answered.

Of course they didn't.

Vox's attention snapped back to me, expression shifting into something almost playful. "Now, now, don't sound so irritated. You used to love a little tension."

I rolled my eyes. "I used to tolerate you."

"Ouch," he said, mock wounded. "That's cold, sweetheart."

Before I could respond-

He moved.

Fast.

One second he was a few steps away, the next he was right in front of me, arm slipping around my shoulders like it belonged there, like it always had.

My body went rigid instantly.

"Still so tense," Vox murmured, leaning in slightly. "You really should relax more."

"Get off," I said flatly.

But he didn't.

Of course he didn't.

Vox had always been like this.

Hands on shoulders, arms around waists, fingers brushing against skin like he needed the contact, like everything had to be physical, tangible, real in a way he could control.
