Dan was sitting alone at a picnic table at the park. It was a typical Tuesday after school. He was watching all his peers running around, laughing, screaming, and all around just having fun. He sighed and stared down into his lap at his fancy, expensive clothing. Sometimes he wished his family wasn't so ridiculously wealthy. Maybe he'd have friends...

Phil's POV

I sat on the swings and looked around the playground. Kids were packed together in pairs and large groups. Except me and one other boy. I saw him every day at the park. He was always sat alone at a table just watching. He never played, did homework, or anything. He just watched. I didn't know why, but suddenly I felt a strong compulsion to go over and talk to him. I stood up and walked to his table. He looked up as he saw me coming. "Mind if I sit?" I pointed to the empty seat across from him. He looked at me skeptically.

"Why would you sit with me? There are plenty of empty tables here." He said. He wasn't being rude or cold, it was more like he was confused and maybe a little shy or scared.

"I'm sorry, am I interrupting something? I don't want to bother you." I politely replied.

"Wait, no! Don't go! It's just that, well, no one ever tries to talk to me. I'm usually all alone." He blushed.

"Well, I'd like to change that." I smiled at him.We talked for a little bit about video games and school. I learned his name was Dan, we went to the same school, and we liked all the same video games. I was sad to leave, but if I didn't get home, my mom would've worried.

"Dan, I'm really sorry, but if I don't leave now, my mom will probably send bounty hunters to find me or princes to come rescue me." I giggled. I stood up and started to walk away, but Dan jumped up and grabbed my wrist.

"Wait! Please hang out with me again! I had so much fun, and no one has ever wanted to talk to me! Please, I'll pay you! I'll pay you a pound a day, every day, if you'd just be my friend!" The desperation in his eyes made my heart melt. I knew I wasn't exactly old enough to understand the concept of "love," but I think I might've started feeling it right then.

"Oh, Dan, you don't have to pay me. I'll be your friend for free."

Dan's POV

"Phil?" I hesitantly called. 16 years ago, today, Phil told me he wanted to be my friend. I wouldn't have to pay him or anything. I was so grateful for him. Recently, my feelings for him grew. I fell in love with him. Today would be the day I either wrecked our friendship, or I started a whole new chapter.

"Yeah, Dan?" Phil answered from the lounge. I took a deep breath and walked over to him.

"Um, Phil? I have something really important to tell you." My voice shook. He put his laptop away and saw the nervous look on my face.

"Is everything ok?" Concern flooded his voice and he started to stand up.

"No, no, it's alright. It's just, um...Iloveyou." I mumbled, trying to get the words out of my mouth as quickly as possible so I could get it over with. My cheeks flushed the color of the inside of a watermelon and I stared at the ground.

"You-what? Sorry, I couldn't hear you." My eyes started to fill with tears as I realized I couldn't say it. Phil stood up and walked over to me and enveloped me in a giant hug. I cried into his shoulder. I couldn't do it, I just couldn't do it.

"Shh, Dan, it's okay." He whispered in my ear. I felt myself calming down, so I decided to try again.

"Phil?" I asked.

"Yeah?" He replied.

"I love you. As in, I'm in love with you." I pulled away and looked into his eyes. He smiled and kissed my cheek.

"I've been waiting 16 years to hear that."

And with that, our lips met, and 16 years of friendship ended and decades of love started.
