Long story short, when Haile was a teenager his family was in a bit of trouble and he got some help to escape (by having a spell cast that turned him into a girl to avoid getting caught).
The magic stuck and now he sporadically changes gender.
He's perfectly fine with it and his tavern patrons place bets on when it's gonna happen next; closest gets a free drink.
