When they first get to Switzerland, Ava is catatonic. Not even hours after the battle with Adriel, Mother Superion was shooting off orders, instructing that all of them needed to split up across the globe. It went without saying that Beatrice would go with Ava.
Ava could hardly remember how they had arrived there, she just remembered being dragged through covert alleyways and side streets until they were at a private airfield. Beatrice flew the suspicious looking piece of aircraft herself, yet another talent of hers, while Ava sat beside her, eyes watching the sky, her mind drifting to Mary.
Mary.
Brave and powerful Mary.
The very person who convinced her to return to the O.C.S to help them fight, was likely now dead. The thought left Ava disappearing into her thoughts, overwhelmed by the guilt of having let down her mentor. This was all her fault, she thought to herself. She released a demon into the world, and now she was running.
Two days after they got to Switzerland, Beatrice had found them both jobs at a small bar in the Alps. Ava had not spoken a word at that point, and Beatrice, always respectful, had given her her space.
Beatrice had taken care of everything: locating the safe house, buying them new clothes, filling the fridge with groceries. And now she had found them a job. When she broke the news to a stoic Ava, who hadn't left her bedroom since they got there, Ava finally snapped.
"There's no way you expect me to work right now."
Beatrice's eyes widened in shock, not expecting Ava to respond. "We need to maintain our cover here while we train, which means we need to work." She said in the matter-of-fact way she said most things.
And usually Ava found Beatrice's no nonsense attitude endearing. Usually, Ava admired the way she carried herself, like she was like an impenetrable force and nothing could affect her.
But right now Ava felt like a coward. It seemed like ever since she could use her legs again, she had been running away: from her duties and responsibilities, from her purpose. Right now, Ava couldn't feel more culpable, staring into the eyes of a wounded and exhausted Beatrice.
"And what about Mary?" Ava asked. "We need to find her."
Beatrice sighs. "Mother Superion has sent Lilith to look for her."
Ava stands from her bed then and raises her voice, her anger suddenly becoming too difficult to suppress.
