~ ADRIANA WATSON ~

“Okay, this is the last one. Bye, love.” I dropped the file on one of my best friends, Mae Evan’s table and hung my bag strap over my shoulder.

“You’re leaving early. What’s going on?” She smirked, leaning closer to me in her seat.

“Yes. Dax wants us to have dinner now, and I don’t really have anything else to do.” A smile crawled up my face, matching the excitement spiraling in me. “Bye.” I turned to leave to avoid her teasing.

“Okay. Make sure to call Tanya so she doesn’t kill us when we get there, and don’t be late for girls’ night.” She yelled.

“Okay.” I yelled back over my shoulder and left her office, stepping into the elevator.

My fingers were dancing involuntarily; I couldn’t wait to see Dax again. I hadn’t spoken to him all morning because he was very busy, so I was glad we were heading out.

When I left the elevator, everyone began to part ways to create a path for me to walk and greeted me. Of course, that was expected when you were the Executive and Finance Manager for the company as well as the ‘Fiancée’ to the CEO.  Yes, Fiancée: Dax had proposed to me two or three years ago.

I stepped out of the company and sauntered to get into Dax's black SUV, still grinning from ear to ear.

“Hey babe,” I greeted and shut the car door, leaning forward to kiss Dax but he turned his head away, an all-too-familiar frown sticking to his face.

“Start the car,” he gruffed at the driver.

My whole excitement shattered as I relaxed into the chair, staring at him intently to understand what was wrong.

He didn’t even spare me a glance and picked his phone, typing aggressively on it.

“Dax babe, what’s wrong?” I asked very calmly, knowing that was the only way to soothe him when he was like this.

When he still didn’t respond, I continued, “you can talk to me. What happened? I thought we were heading out for—”

“Just shut the fuck up!” He hollered. I flinched and my eyes widened at his outburst. “That’s all you fucking care about: hanging out, spending my money on unimportant things, chilling with your shitty friends, and… and… you don’t even give a damn about what’s going on with me!” He continued yelling, “I’ve just walked out of a bad day at work and all you fucking care about is going out, chilling, and you're smiling at my face like a stupid raccoon.” He hissed and balled his hand into fists, hitting the driver’s headrest with a grunt.

My mouth and eyes were still agape and my heart was pounding harsh against my ribcage.

When he continued typing on his phone, I cleared my throat and regained my composure, dropping my bag between us. “Dax, I’m sorry.” That was the only approach that could bring peace. I didn’t like any arguments or stress amongst us, so I always had to play the role of cooling the atmosphere in situations like this.
