~ADRIANA ~

I had made breakfast for both of us and served them on the table. I had woken up with a suspicious extremely cheer-filled spirit today and had been grinning all morning.

I dried my wavy brown hair with a towel and tied it up into a rough bun, coating my lips with lip gloss. I stared at myself in the bathroom mirror and acknowledged that I looked really great.

For some reason, I wanted to look good for Bob. I know he had mentioned my appearance a few times when he was half sleepy, but I wanted to hear him tell me how beautiful I was for a confidence boost.

After a final glance at my reflection, I happily sauntered to the bedroom to call him out for breakfast, still grinning from ear to ear.

My smile slipped off to see that he wasn’t in here. “Where is he? He was here just a while ago.” A small frown rested on my face and I headed to the porch, just in time to see him walk out of the compound with a briefcase in his hand while he was clearly speaking with someone on the phone.

“My effort would just be wasted.” I had been looking forward to having breakfast with him this morning.

I returned to the living room and sat on the sofa, I had suddenly lost appetite to eat anything and was feeling sulky that he wasn’t here.

I stared around and the house felt way too empty and boring, it made me miss Bob’s presence. Regardless of whether or not he was busy while he was at home, I enjoyed his presence and his company.

I was still drowning in my boredom when I heard a ring.

I rose to my feet and followed the sound of the ring to the telephone and answered it with an unsure, “hello?”

“Hi, Adriana. I’m so glad it’s you.” Tanya’s voice was filled with relief.

“I’m glad to speak to you too, but why do you sound so relieved?” I wondered, sitting beside the telephone.

“Oh, nothing. I haven’t spoken to you in a while, so I was worried.” I heard her chuckle.

“Aw, okay.” I smiled, glad that she called at the right time.

“How are you doing?” she asked.

“I’m doing quite well. I’m getting along well enough with this contract marriage of mine.” I admitted, fiddling with the ends of my hair.

“By the way, I have to ask: what’s the name of your husband?” she asked and I was certain that if she was beside me, she was going to be squinting her eyes at me.

“My husband? Bob. Why did you ask?”

“Oh, Bob.”

“Why did you ask?” I repeated.

“Nothing much. I saw the news and I was wondering if it could be linked to him, but it clearly isn’t .” she said dismissively.

“Oh, okay.”

“By the way, I wanted to ask if you've heard anything from Mae.” She wondered.

“Mae? Oh, yeah, I was going to call her but I’ve not been able to.”

“I’d advise you to not call her or tell her about your whereabouts and circumstance till you’re ready to reveal it. I don’t mean to be terrible or anything, but I was thinking that since she works for Dax, if she knows about your whereabouts, he can easily threaten her, and we both know how intentional about being more successful Mae is, she wouldn’t want to lose or trade her job for anything at all, and it'd give Dax the upper hand.” She advised me.
