Chapter One

Synergy

Jadyn's P.O.V

A wise person once said, 'Nothing makes us feel as lonely as our secrets.' . This is the story of how my best friend's secret cost him his life. The question is, where do I begin? Let's start at the beginning.

Hi, I'm Jadyn Hill, a 17-year-old junior at Westfield High School. I have curly dark brown hair and caramel brown eyes which vary according to my mood, so I guess the eyes really are windows to the soul. I have a square shaped face, so I find my brows to be one of the most attractive features. In any case, I am five feet and seven inches tall and pride myself on my naturally fit physique because I do not exercise. And here's the big surprise, I'M GAY! While it's no surprise to me, but everyone else in this small town seems shocked by the news. Which I can't understand for the life of me because I like to think that I exude 'gay' from my aura. I don't really have much personality to talk about due to a number of factors. I'm typically a shy person. Unless I'm with my best friend Kahlil, I don't talk much.

Which brings us to our next topic, Kahlil Smith. Kahlil has been my best friend since pre-k. Both of our mothers work at the same law firm and are pretty good friends. When they found out that their kids were around the same age, a play date while the mothers sipped on their wine seemed inevitable. As a result of Kahlil trying to engage me in conversation and me being intimidated, our first meeting was very awkward. With help from his kind eyes and familial gestures, he managed to loosen my four-year-old heart and he's been one of the only constants in my life ever since. Also there is no doubt about it, he is straight as they come. That very much needed to be said because this is not one of those 'I fell in love with my best friend' gigs.

While we are still on the subject of Kahlil, I'll give you a brief description of him. Standing at six feet three, he has very dark brown kinky hair that contrasts sharply with his light brown skin and deep brown borderline black Irises. His disposition is very mysterious and serious. In addition to being a bit of a buzzkill sometimes, he can also be very caring, outgoing, and even dashing. But you didn't hear that from me!

As far as society's standards are concerned, my best friend is the definition of attractive. But that's neither here nor there. His looks have never blinded me because he's always been my best friend or the brother I've always wanted. Kahlil is also older than me, but just by three months. He turned eighteen last month on November eighteenth and I turn eighteen on February eighteenth. It's common for people in our school to assume that I like him, but that's far from the truth. In fact, I have my sights set on someone else.

Zion Brooks is the guy I'm actually interested in. Honestly, just hearing his name makes me smile. When I was nine years old, I had the pleasure of seeing him for the first time, and I've been in love with him ever since. I know that's a little young to declare love for someone but I know what I feel! The funny thing about this is that I met him at a Christian camp. Just imagine it, a little gay boy at Christian camp, the irony. Now don't get me wrong, yes I'm gay. But did my spiritual beliefs change because of my sexual preference? No of course not, I still consider myself like seventy percent Christian.

Since we met at Christian camp, I feel like I should tell you why I was sent there. Let's just say I never had the chance to 'come out' to my parents before they noticed and took action. When I was in the fourth grade, my parents took my sister to an audition for a performing arts school, letting me know that they would return later. When they came home they found me completely dressed up in my sister's Sunday dresses and mothers makeup. To say they weren't 'pleased' would be an understatement.
