this was insufferable.
you were completely sure that sae had nothing other than football going for him. his drawing skills were abysmal, turning the flowers and vase into what appeared to be a hurricane with a very distorted shape. the petals had no details and you could make out the flower by the dark patches of sae's scribbles. you were using the very last ounce of patience in you to not slap the back of his head, more so afraid of a possible lawsuit than his wrath.
"what am i meant to do with this?" you mumbled looking at the drawing, if you could even call it that, while sae scrolled on his phone without a care in the world. surely he tried his best.
somewhat.
you glanced at him, scrutinising his face for any sign of a care or bother in him but failed to find any trace. his hair was still that horrible mess of mahogany spikes and auburn edges. his eyes skimming over his screen with indifference, glowing like a cerulean glass window, cold yet intricate. they were like ocean blue in the summer afternoons, the sun still blazing from high up in the sky, and only the prickly sand and salty wind are around you. his clothes plain and free of any crease, 'is that even possible?' surely there must be some sort of trick he's playing, there had to be a name for that something about him that aggravated you so much.
his calmness was annoying however; he didn't care at all.
"you weren't the best in your art class, were you?" you sighed, setting the notebook down peeking at sae from the corner of your eyes.
"you weren't the best dressed, were you?" he replied nonchalantly, not taking his eyes off his phone.
this bitch.
you gaped at him, holding your tongue back and taking a deep breath. 'be the bigger person,' you bit the inside of your cheek and closed your eyes for a moment, 'swallow your pride, for once.'
"ok you know i think we started on the wrong foot, we've been throwing insults at each other and we didn't have the best first impression so how about we start over?" you held your hand out, genuinely wanting to get along, with a soft look in your eyes.
sae glanced at your hand and looked you up and down with an unreadable expression before turning back to his phone and resuming his scrolling, "sure."
your stomach decided to regurgitate your pride, letting it burn up in your throat and sting your mouth, thick with insults and pettiness. the lawsuit doesn't seem too bothersome anymore. maybe a punch or two will get your point across. your stomach also decided that it had enough of going through this without food as looked at your empty mug. 'patience, y/n, patience. food resolves everything.'
"how about we go grab lunch then come back to figure the painting out?" you suggested, sure that you weren't the only one who was hungry.
"what are you trying to do?" he narrowed his eyes at you, turning his phone off, ready to leave if his suspicions were correct.
"to make peace with you using food, now let's go, there's a good dim sum place downtown," you said getting up and heading towards the door.
"this isn't-"
"no, this isn't a date," you shouted as you put your shoes and jacket on. sae sighed for the umpteenth time that afternoon and grabbed his jacket.
"you're paying," he said, walking past you as soon as the door opened.
the streets were bustling with teenagers skipping school, laughing at each other and smoking stolen cigarettes, spending their youth in carefree idiocy. couples who were enjoying their time off work and clinging on to each other while sighing and complaining about deadlines. the air was fresh amd artificial, sweeping through the streets and people, car horns and muffled music passed you by as you opened the door to the dim sum restaurant.
"find a table and i'll order," you told sae who partially hid his face in his jacket and walked to an empty table in a secluded corner.
luck was on your side as the restaurant was fairly empty, except for a group of teenagers and a group of office workers at the front. heading to the register, you smiled as the owner of the shop noticed you.
"ah y/n, how are you? i haven't seen you in a while," takahiro yushima, was the sweet yet stern old man who owned the restaurant along with his wife and son, ever since you moved here, you came non-stop to the point you were like a second child to him and his family. he gave the best advice on any topic ranging from friends to beating someone up but thankfully the latter was rarely discussed. he also made the best fried noodles in the city.
"work's been keeping me busy but god did i miss your noodles, is aunty here? i'm craving for her pork dumplings," you sighed, leaning on the counter.
"yes she is, now what would you like? also who was that man?"
"two fried vegetable noodles, two steamed pork dumplings, with soy sauce, and two cokes. and he's someone i'm working with for the moment so no it's not what you think, he's really stuck-up so i'm using food to level with him," you smiled, paying him as he feigned offence.
"i don't know what you're talking about, i haven't said anything," he shrugged his shoulders but his eyes still had that teasing glint, "but good luck."
"thank you," you said as he disappeared to the kitchen and walked to the back of the shop and found sae scrolling on his phone once again, mindlessly reading some news article. you sat in front of him, tensing up at the awkwardness, 'is he always this quiet?'
"you're staring," sae says looking up and meeting your gaze, "what did you order?"
"i wasn't staring and i ordered fried vegetable noodles and pork dumplings with some coke. i didn't know if you wanted something sweet or savoury for desert so we'll order that later," you put your right elbow on the table, resting your head in your hand and took you phone out, too hungry to argue.
