I faked a smile. "Yes, I'll make sure the papers are turned in tomorrow."
Cynthia oozed a smile that was dripping with fake sugar. "You are SUCH a doll. Thanks Blake!" She walked away, her heels clicking. Her ponytail must be cutting off the blood flow to her brain.
I rolled my eyes when she was finally gone. Sometimes, pretending to be nice was hard work.
"How's your day going?" I looked up to see Jake Pearson smiling down at me. I resisted the urge to roll my eyes again. Instead, I forced another smile.
"It's going swell, how about yours?"
He chuckled. "Better, now that I got to see you."
I laughed. "How sweet of you. Now if you'll be excuse me, I have some papers to take care of." I got up and headed towards the bathroom. I sighed. My morning was NOT going well.
----"You know he has the hots for you."
I let out an inward groan.
"Yes mother, but I'm not interested in Jake."
My mother sighed, making her disapproval obvious. "I just wish you would find somebody and settle down. I want grand babies, you know?"I cringed at her words. "Mom. I'm only twenty-two."
She clucked her tongue. "Yes, well, her sister was twenty when she got married and had a baby."
Now it was my turn to sigh. Of course she would try and guilt trip me into marrying someone. I just wasn't ready for a commitment like that.
"Mom, you know I can't be in a relationship, not after... Him."
My voice turned to hatred at the thought of Devon."Devon was a nice boy, he just couldn't decide what he wanted in life."
I laughed bitterly. "So you think it was okay for him to go around sleeping with my best friend?"
I never wanted to revisit my memories of high school. Devon was like my first love. He was sweet, gentle, caring...and then he goes and sleeps with my best friend. I promised myself the day that I found out that I would never talk to either of them ever again.
"Blake, please. You never even gave him a chance to explain."
Her voice turned sharp and harsh.I was shocked. "I'm sorry, I didn't know that you should just forgive someone after they go and deceive you multiple times. Look mom, I need to go. My...package was just delivered."
I hung up before she could say anything else. God, sometimes I couldn't stand her.Later that night, I was lying in bed when I got a message from an unknown number. Text message: Blake miller, please be sure to be at Hilton Palace tomorrow evening at 8:00.
I stared at the phone screen, reading it over and over again. Who sent me this mystery text? I decided to deal with it tomorrow. Right now I was way too tired. My mystery text could be solved in the morning.
