I flatten out my uniform as I stare myself down in the mirror. A knock at the door lets me blink and I go to open it and let him in, it's Grey. He looks terribly brave and handsome in his uniform. His eyebrows are furrowed.
"Hello Grey" I say to him.
"Hello George" he replies.
"Come in" I tell him and he smiles at me and steps through the door. I close it behind him.
Today we both leave for war. We're going to separate places so when we each get on our trains, it could be the last time that we ever see each other.
We've known each other since preschool. We grew up together as best mates and shared our passion of war. We are 19 now and are closer than any brothers.
"You all ready then?" Grey asks me, his spectacular silver grey eyes concerned.
"Yeah, I'm packed and I've said my goodbyes..." I trail off , "hey, we should go"
An exchange of smiles and we exit the house, getting into Greys old ford. We turn on the radio and sing along to raise the mood.
After a long drive, a plane flight and a bus journey, we arrive at the train station.
Rain falls heavily on the canopy above the trains. His will arrive 6 minutes before mine so we stand on station 4, waiting for his train to arrive.
For the first time in forever we have nothing to say to each other so I look into his eyes and he looks into mine.
Toot toot.
His train pulls into the station and we hug.
"Good luck mate, I'll see you on the other side ok?" I tell him
"I'll write to you, all the time, see you mate" he replies
Then he turns and walks to the train doors. He is about to step on when he turns back to me.
He runs. Runs back towards me and grabs my face. His eyes lock with mine for a split second before he kisses me passionately.
For a few seconds we are one person but the train hoots again, tearing him from me. I don't know how to react so I watch him sprint to the train doors, jump in and disappear from my life.
