Friday November 30, 4:55 pm
It was a normal Friday night and I was just finishing up so I could head home and get ready to have holiday dinner with my future in-laws. I had just logged off my computer and finished filing some papers away when my partner and best friend Kale Crestwell walked into my office.
"Hey McGullin, I just wanted to congratulate you on making detective." Kale said slapping his hand on my shoulder.
"Thanks, I couldn't have done it without your help. Thanks for all those extra nights studying man I owe you." I said turning around to shake his hand.
"No problem you deserve it, and I know you would have done the same for me." He said leaning up against my desk. "So what's your plan with that big promotion bonus?"
"Well Abigail and I are finally going to get married."
"Woah really dude! I never thought you'd tie the knot, especially after Adelaide and Gideon were born."
"Well we were just trying to wait until we had enough money. And now I finally do."
"Well congratulations man! Your so lucky to have such a wonderful family."
"Thanks." I said looking at my watch. It was now 4:59 pm and I had to get going if I was going to be able to make it home to clean up before going to dinner with Abigail's family. "Well sorry I can't stay I need to get home so I don't make the in-laws wait." I say grabbing my coat.
"Oh yeah wouldn't want to get on their bad side." Kale says teasingly.
We were both about to walk out the door when Chief Preston walks in carrying a letter and a package.
"Good evening chief." I say giving him a quick salute.
"Good evening gentleman. Might I ask for a couple moments of your time?" He asked looking at Kale and I.
"Sure thing sir." Kale said looking at me to which I agreed and started taking off my coat.
"I don't want to take up much of your time I'm sure you both have plans, but I wanted to inquire you about a package that came today." He says handing it over to me.
I weigh out the package in my hands trying to get an idea of what maybe inside. I place it on my desk and carefully open up the envelope attached to it.
On the first day of Christmas my true love gave to me... a stabbed kidney...
"What's it say McGullin?" Kale ask looking at me in suspense. I quickly hand him the letter and he skims the contents and his face goes pale. "This must be some kind of Christmas prank." He says handing it over to the chief.
"It looks like a holiday greeting card well with a few words changed. I think we should hold on to this I'm not sure if it's a threat or not." He says folding the parchment and grabbing a file folder.
"Well there's still the box." I say holding my breath hoping it was just some cookies so that we could just wrap up and go home. It was already getting late and I didn't want to keep people waiting.
"Well go ahead and be my guest." Says the chief looking at me expectantly.
"Ok here it goes." I say unwrapping the Christmas paper from the box. "Ok looks like a lot of tape, Kale hand me my box cutter please?"
He nods and hands me the box cutter. Red liquid starts oozing out of the box. When I finally get it open I hesitantly open the box and peek inside.
"Shit! Looks like I need to call Abigail and let her know I won't be making it for dinner."
