The buzzing of the fluorescent lights were the only sounds that filled the room. Not even breathing could be heard as Wilbur stared into the dull, gray eyes of his principal.
"William..." Mr. Edwards exhaled, "what happened out there? You have never been the type to get into fights."
"I don't know, sir, I just... he made me so mad. He was talking about me sister that that is not okay with me." Wilbur responded.
"I... suppose I understand that. However, you must understand that violence is never the answer. If you had just told an adult, he would be in big trouble, and we would not be having this conversation." Mr. Edwards looked down at his papers, sighed again, then looked back up at Wilbur. "I will give you the benefit of the doubt because I don't believe you'll continue with this behavior. However, I do still have to punish you. Instead of 3 days suspension you will have 2 days detention. Okay?"
Wilbur nodded. "Thank you, sir."
"Now back to class, alright? I must have a talk with Mr. Davis too." Wilbur got up from his chair and left the room. He speed-walked down the hall, and when he entered his class, the room went silent.
He slid into his desk and looked at the teacher.
"What are you don't back in here?" She said in a harsh tone. "Go back to the principal's office. You are suspended."
"Uh- Mr. Edwards said I wasn't actually. Just detention." He responded.
"So if I ask him, he'll say that's the truth?" She said, clearly think that he was lying. Wilbur just nodded.
She sighed.
"Whatever," she said, and gave him a sheet of paper filled with complicated problems. "As I was saying..." He didn't listen to her after that. He instead turned his attention onto the work. As he was starting problem number seven, his best friend, and probably only friend, Mateo Carr, tapped him on the back.
He sat behind Wilbur in their math class. He curly black hair, and olive skin, which made his icy blue eyes stand out greatly. He and Wilbur had become friends in 1st grade, during a math lecture, so it was fitting that they would be in the same math class now.
"What happened? What did he say that bothered you so badly?" Mateo asked. Wilbur shook his head, indicating that he didn't want to talk about it. Mateo took the hint, and they didn't talk for the rest of the period.
