The thunder crashed in the distance and the sky lit up with forks of lightning. Rain streamed down the window panes. Everyone was fast asleep.

Or supposed to be ; Harper sat on the edge of her bed clutching a baseball bat, thinking about her next move. - She'd been woken up suddenly by a loud crash coming from somewhere downstairs. Harper's first instinct had been to rush downstairs and knock who, or what it was on the head with her bat, the only problem was she didn't know what was down there, it could be dangerous.
...
She decided to have a look anyway. Harper crept down the stairs trying to stay away from the creaky steps. Her heart was pounding like a machine gun, and this annoyed her more than anything because she was never scared, she was black belt in karate. But karate had rules, and she always knew who her opponent was, whoever was in her house, could have a gun in which case karate was no use.

A faint noise came from the kitchen so she tiptoed quietly in that direction; still clutching her bat. Stepping through the kitchen door she  was completely unprepared for what she saw ... standing in front of the open fridge was a boy. She could only see the back of him, he looked about 13, the same age as her, he had dark brown hair he wore navy jeans and a dark green jumper. She wondered why a burglar would be interested in her fridge? Maybe he wasn't a burglar. Creeping up behind him Harper clamped her hand over his mouth so he wouldn't scream. He struggled trying to get away. She put her finger up to her lips in a signal to be quiet, and took her hand from over his mouth. When he turned to face her she could see a large scar running along one of his cheeks. He had bright blue eyes and looked terrified but stood straight looking right into her eyes. "Who are you?" said Harper, "and why are you looking in my fridge?". "I'm Zach, and your fridge looked interesting." He joked. "Really?" said Harper, crossing her arms. "Fine then, I ran away from an orphanage months ago, I've been living in the woods ever since. I ran out of food so I was getting some from your fridge." Said Zach. "Orphanage?" She questioned. "Yeah, my parents died in a car crash years ago, I couldn't stand it in the orphanage anymore so I ran away". "And you've been living in the woods?". "I used to live on a farm, I like the woods". Zach replied.

Hi, I've never written a book before so it might not sound quite right. Please comment if you would like me to continue writing this book or have any suggestion for what should happen in the next chapter, also I don't like the title very much so any suggestions for that would be really helpful. Thanks 😁
