I felt weird holding Jimmy's arm as Ethel tailed behind us. We stopped in front of my tent and I smiled at the rinky dink little thing. "Miss Elsa is going to look around for some furniture and a cot or maybe an actual bed for you to sleep on for the time being, but we have to order your actual trailer. Jimmy and I will do some looking around for ya, but in the meantime you are going to have to bunk with someone," she told me. I smiled sheepishly at her, hoping that she wasn't going to suggest that I bunk with Jimmy.
"Do you think I could bunk with Dot and Bette then? They're both girls and...I would just feel more comfortable with them than anyone else," I replied, hoping there'd be enough room for all three of us. Ethel nodded her head.
"I don't see why not. Let's go ask 'em," she said and she started to waddle off. I followed her, leaving Jimmy by himself.
"So, you'd rather stay in a bunk with a set of Siamese twin girls than a man who can please you huh?" he asked, causing me to stop dead in my tracks. I turned around to face him.
"Excuse me?" I asked in surprise. "Who are you to make such comments at me?" He shrugged his shoulders.
"Some chick who just rolled into town. All the women here want me, minus my mother."
"Well if your mother heard you talking to a girl like that, I'd hope she'd smack you silly. Dot and Bette are my friends." He scoffed.
"Yeah sure. Just remember that they are mine. Don't be getting any ideas." I glared at him. We'll see about that. Wait what?
"I'm not a homosexual," I replied sternly, wanting for him to leave me alone. His grin grew wider.
"Uh huh. I saw the way you were eyeing Bette. You got the hots for at least one of the twins." I gritted my teeth together, trying to hold my tongue back.
"Listen here, Bette and Dot are two very beautiful women. They aren't objects to me. They are my friends. They're probably the only reason that Miss Elsa agreed to let me join you guys. If anything, you should learn some more respect for women. I doubt any girl would sleep with you if you didn't pull the sweet and innocent act on them, but it won't fool me. I'm immune to it. So, you don't be getting any ideas about trying to hurt Bette or Dot, or I will have your head!" It turned on my heel and stormed off in a huff.
I had lost track of Ethel, still fuming. I found the twins' trailer and heard voices coming from the inside. I knocked on the door, and Ethel threw it open, walking down. She gestured for me to go inside and I walked in quietly. Bette set down her magazine giving me a sweet smile while Dot's eyes were filled with jealousy. "Ethel told us about your need in a place to sleep for a few days," Bette said. "Would you like to stay with us?" I nodded my head and her smile grew wider. "Then come on in and shut that door!" I laughed as I walked inside, pulling the door shut behind me. Dot went back to her book, while Bette watched me sit down on the couch. There were posters strung up of different places and singers and actresses on the walls, catching my eye.
Bette moved to sit up, but Dot held her back, giving her a dirty look. "The posters are lovely," I said. I pointed at a singer that I recognized. "Dinah Shore?" Bette's face lit up like a lightbulb.
"You know of Dinah Shore?" I nodded my head, chuckling.
"Yeah who hasn't really right?" Bette chuckled and I caught a playful smile on Dot's face before she could hide it behind her book. She closed the book and moved with Bette to sit on the edge of the bed, closer to me. I started to grow nervous again.
"So...where are you guys from?" Bette looked to Dot and then lowered her head in shame. "Did I say something wrong?" Dot shook her head.
"No, forgive my sister. We're originally from Alabama, but we had to move. Bette just...doesn't like to talk about why is all." Dot looked over at Bette and stroked her hair lovingly, making my heart warm.
"I can understand that," I said, more to Bette than to Dot. "I don't like talking about the asylum. It was awful scary, and the nuns there were pretty mean." Bette lifted her head, eyes filled with tears.
"So were the nurses at the hospital we were kept in." Dot hushed her, continuing to stroke her hair.
"It's alright, Bette. Remember what Jimmy said? We are a part of this family now. None of them will let anything happen to us." I held back the growl that rested in my throat. What a lying sack of croc.
"I won't let anything happen to you either, Bette. I promise." I smiled at her and Bette held her arm open to me. I walked over and knelt down in front of them, letting her hug me tightly. Dot rubbed my back too. It's like being held by one person, but with two minds. I took in a deep breath, and smelled two differnt perfumes. Two different tastes. How remarkable! I was overly fascinated with these two women. They shared one body, but held two different minds and had their own personal thoughts.
They dazzled me, and I couldn't understand why I found them so attractive, and I found myself growing more nervous by the minute as I thought about sleeping in the same room as them. A knock at the door made me jump and I looked over my shoulder as Stanley walked in, no sign of Elsa this time. "Esmeralda, I am going to head back to the motel. Do you want to come with me?" he asked, holding his hand out. I shook my head, leaning into Bette and Dot's chest.
"No. Thank you, Uncle, but I want to stay with Bette and Dot." He gave me a strained smile, but pretended to be overjoyed.
"Good to see that you are already making new friends dear. I'll see you tomorrow okay?" I nodded my head and he walked back out. I was so comfortable that I didn't want to move, but of course someone else had to ruin the moment. This time it was that womanizer, Jimmy, who came knocking. He glared at the position I was in, and I felt Dot push me over to Bette, who gave her a confused look.
"Hi, Jimmy," Dot greeted him. Jimmy smirked and winked at me, making my stomach churn.
"Hey, Dot. Hey, Bette." Bette gave him a smile and rested her hand on my head.
"Is there something you want, Jimmy?" He nodded his head, snapping out of a daze. I glared back at him.
"Elsa wanted me to collect you guys for dinner," he said. I rose to my feet, taking Bette's hand as I helped them up. Dot and her smiled at me, and my cheeks turned red. Jimmy coughed, mumbling "faggot," as he did so. Bette's eyes shot over to him faster than a speeding bullet.
"Jimmy, I know you did not just say something rude to Miss Esmeralda," she said sternly. Jimmy smiled sheepishly, knowing that he had been caught. Dot gave him a funny look and I stood there, twiddling my thumbs. "We can escort Miss Esmeralda to dinner by ourselves, Jimmy, thank you very much." Jimmy walked away, looking disgruntled. Bette entwined her fingers with mine giving me a sweet smile. "Let's go, Emmie." My heart raced as that name rolled off her tongue so easily. I walked with them out to dinner, where I saw the other freaks gathered.
Elsa sat at the head of the table, looking smug with lipstick on her teeth. Ever heard of Vaseline? I smiled at Dot and Bette while Jimmy sat on the other side of the room with Ethel. Stay over there you little urchin. It's not that I was jealous of Jimmy, but he was going to hurt Bette and Dot if I didn't interfere. Plus I really liked them, I just...was confused as to how I liked them. They enticed me, and peaked my curiousity on a different level than any other woman has before. Not even the woman with the three breasts and penis could draw me away from them.
Bette smiled at me, giving me a wink, causing my face to turn red. She reached across the table, taking my hand in hers. Dot looked rather confused or angry, it was hard to tell honestly. "We should go back to the trailer," Bette said, biting her lip as she never lost eye contact with me. The feelings that my heart was experiencing were confusing for me. Did I really have "the hots," as Jimmy put it for the twins, or was I just feeling a very strong connection with them? "I have some Dinah Shore records we could listen to." She caught my attention and I nodded my head, walking with them as I held Bette's hand tightly in my own.
