"After hitting the surface the
shock blows the star apart
and the light goes away."Sheriff Douglas
"Sheriff I think you're gonna want to see this." A girl from forensics calls."What is it?" I ask.
"I found a pill bottle in his pocket, do you think it was a suicide?"
"I don't know this is completely new to me." I let out a stress filled sigh.
Never in my decade of working as a sheriff in Illinois have we found a body in the lake let alone a famous one like Lake Michigan with a missing person from a year ago. I mean how did it go so long without anyone seeing anything.
His body had started to decompose from being in the water for so long his arms were covered with bite marks from different animals eating at him. It was a horrid sight whatever he looked like before, he seemed to be unrecognizable now.
I know when this gets out to the public the community will be outraged. It was going to be hard to hide a case like this.
"Bag the body up and get it ready to be autopsied please let me know when the report comes back." I say to the forensic worker.
"Yes sir," She nods.
"Can you call the parents and ask them if they can come down and have a word with us." I ask my deputy.
He nods and goes off into the car to make the call. Once we make it back to station his parents were already there in the waiting room both their eyes red from exhaustion and crying.
I knew the pain of losing a child was difficult, especially if you couldn't do anything to stop it. They were probably going through hell right about now. I lead them to my office so we could talk.
"Thank you for coming in today I know it must be hard for you right now."
"No problem anything we can do to figure this out." Mr. Williams speaks his voice low and tired.
"Has your son ever showed signs of depression or anxiety?"
"I'm sorry, but are you suspecting that my son killed himself?" The mother says offended.
" I'm just trying to rule out all of the possibilities, we did find anxiety pills in his pocket." I say calmly.
"What?" She asks in disbelief.
"Are you sure there was no possibility of him being suicidal?" I ask determined.
"Yes my son would never."
"Okay did Amir have any friends that might be able to vouch for him anytime before he went missing? Maybe they'd know someone that he had problems with?"
"He has a best friend his names Jordan."
"Do you know his last name?" I ask writing his name down.
"Samson,"she answers.
"Okay I'll look into that, thank you for your time." I nod.
"That's it?" She asks he voice shaky.
"Yes I can't do anything until further investigation."
"What about my son?! Where is he?!" She yells.
"I haven't seen him in over a year and now I get a call thats he's dead? I just want to see my baby!" She cry's in despair.
"Calm down now." Her husband warns grabbing her hand. But I could tell he was holding himself back.
"I understand you want to see him but I don't know if you'd be able to see him, his body isn't what it use to be."
"I don't care! Its my right to see my child."
"Okay." I sigh making a phone call to the moratory.
I escort them to the moratory down the road and watch as as they walk inside the room. I stand outside looking through the window.
The man unzips the bag revealing the body. The mother collapsed in her husbands arms in sobs at the sight of him.
"No not my baby." She sobs screaming, her voice was haunting.
You could feel the pain just from her voice. She reaches out touching his cold face rubbing her thumb longingly on his cheek.
"Just who did this to you?" She shakes her head tears falling down her face.
Her husband was turned away from the body trying to hold back his sobs although I could see tears falling down his face.
There was a word to describe a child without a parent (orphan) and a word to describe a spouse without a significant other (widow) but there was never a word to describe a parent that loses a child.
Mainly because there was no way to describe it, the pain and loneliness of not having the child you held and cared for most of your life it was inexplainable.

"So you're telling me there was a girl he was obsessed with?" I ask the blonde boy.
"Yes her names Nova Desire she probably can tell you more. I don't know her that well we only met once going to a haunted house together with Amir and a few friends they seemed to be off even then," Jordan says worriedly.
"Why do you say that?"
"He was just acting like a different person, he was so controlling over her and then after a few days he got into an argument with Nova. We wouldn't hang out anymore like we usually did and he was paranoid like he was hiding something."
"Do you know what they we're arguing about."
"Yeah, she found out he was two timing her and she told him she kissed some guy I don't know if it was true or not but he blew up and started hurting her."
"Were you there when it happened?"
"No Amir called me ranting about it on the phone, he seemed pretty pissed off."
"Do you know if anything else happened after that?"
"After the whole fight he tried to win her back but she wasn't having it. He seemed to be in a really dark place because not long after he went ghost and completely stopped talking to me and the rest of our friends."
"Okay thank you for your time, if there's anything else you can think off give me a call." I say handing him my card.
"Yes sir." He nods walking me out the door.
So it turns out the deceased wasn't as innocent as he seemed. This is going to bigger than I thought, I sigh getting in the car.
