In the world of energy, there is an international standard, ISO 50001, created by the International Organization for Standardization for energy system management. This standard defines the rules for installing, implementing, and improving the energy management system. The concept of energy management is not developed in all companies in our country. Nevertheless, many large enterprises have begun to pay special attention to this area. Today's primary goal of energy professionals is to improve the energy system and its three components: energy efficiency, energy consumption, and energy safety.

What is energy efficiency? First of all, it is a competent and rational use of energy in the activities of enterprises. In fact, specialists in the fuel and energy complex seek to use fewer energy resources while maintaining the level of energy supply of production processes. Rational use of energy resources not only reduces the cost of production but also reduces the burden on the environment, reducing emissions. To optimize resources, an international standard ISO 50001 Energy management systems - Requirements with guidance for use (Energy Management Systems - Requirements and guidance for use) was developed. The problem with using this standard is that to use it, and you need to have some specific knowledge and extensive experience in this area. In addition, the standard is a framework; that describes the general conditions and provisions which must adapt to local production. It is difficult to apply international provisions in each specific situation - they must be supplemented, deepened, and interpreted depending on the industry.

The Russian top manager of the energy sector, Andrey Khodykin, after studying international standards and gaining experience from his American colleagues during a visit to the United States, was able to analyze the construction of the energy management system and see in practice how the provisions of ISO 50001 are interpreted. At that time, our country did not use international ISO 50001 requirements. Due to his vast experience and expertise in the energy sector, sustainable energy production manager Andrey Khodykin created a unique manual called "In simple words about the international standard ISO 50001:2018". Top manager Andrey Khodykin made the standard more understandable and accessible to Russian enterprises. This book has become a real handbook for improving energy efficiency, which tells how to properly use, consume and redistribute energy in accordance with international regulations in a particular production. The book's presentation by energy expert Andrey Khodykin took place at a seminar on the application of ISO 50001:2018.

This handbook helps young professionals to understand their place in the whole structure of the organization, allows them to make the right decisions in specific situations, introduces innovations of the international standard, and shows the need for competent energy management at enterprises. According to Andrey Khodykin, the book has received good feedback from his colleagues, and those companies that have started implementing international standards have managed to cut costs and increase efficiency. The book has been published thanks to the tremendous knowledge of Andrey Khodykin, who has devoted his entire life to the fuel and energy complex. The experience of an energy engineer and a top manager, many years of work and research, practice, the study of international experience, and scientific journals - all this helped Andrey to create a manual that interprets the requirements of international standards as correctly as possible. The book helps large and medium-sized businesses correctly apply the principles of energy efficiency management at all stages of system implementation. In addition, the publication has several annexes with diagrams and templates designed for practical application.

Our life is not standing still, and, over time, international standards will change and be updated. But according to expert Khodykin Andrey, the approach to energy management will remain the same in the next ten years. Smooth implementation of energy management in companies will ensure their competitiveness, sustainable development, and profitability.
