It was late afternoon as I waited at Cherry Hollow's station. I looked up at the large and rather old station clock with the Roman numerals hanging on the wall.
I tiptoed around on the platform.
5 minutes to departure.
Would he make it?
Soon we hit a 20 minute delay and I felt ridiculous. He knew how much it meant to me to have him with me, and yet I had ended up sitting and waiting on the platform.
Hopefully it could only be a matter of time before Ian would come rushing out the glass doors with his big goofy smile.
"I guess you didn't think I had forgotten you." he would say, and then he would kiss my lips, which had grown cold in the September cold.
I sighed deeply and with a patience that was running thin, I decided to send another message.
- Are you on your way? This was my third message and I hadn't heard anything yet. Although it was difficult, I tried not to get anxious.
He had promised me that this time he would make it.
I turned off the display with a click.
The weather forecast had otherwise promised sunshine and warm weather for the next two weeks, and so far it had not turned out to be very much of any of the parts.
The sky was almost constantly gray at the time.
And today was no exception. The sky was ominously black and completely covered with heavy rain-filled clouds.
I felt the phone beep with a message. It was from Ian.
- Hey darling. ❤
Where are you?I looked up from the phone, hoping to see him walking around the corner.
I answered immediately:
-I'm waiting on the platform. The train is leaving in a little while, where are you?The text bubble with the three little dots appeared, only to disappear again. A constricting sensation that I knew so well took shape in my chest. I watched the screen and felt like I had been waiting forever when the message finally came.
-I was really hoping you hadn't left home yet. I know I'm writing late, but I just stopped by the office so Alex and I can go over our PowerPoint again before the meeting on Monday.
We can take the train together later.I clutched the phone and had to read it one more time. Even though my gut had been absolutely right, I still couldn't believe it.
Despite our agreement, he chose a PowerPoint presentation over me, and not only that, he had kept me waiting for almost 30 minutes.
Without answering, I put the phone back safely in my pocket. I had already let the train pass once before, I wasn't going to do that again.
I picked up my disappointed feelings and bag from the tarmac, and walked towards my train, which rolled onto the platform.
